Americans are VERY good at willful ignorance.. The best in the world, actually.

A trait developed over generations ever since the genocide of the native American population.

I see so many people on the so-called Left even say he "betrayed" his base. No he didn't. You lied to yourselves.

The man started his campaign in 2016 calling Mexicans "rapists". If after that, you believed he was gonna lift a finger to improve the lives of anyone but greedy low lives like himself, then you are part of the problem and deserve the shit that's happening.

Which may be true and could be debated simply because the entire lot of them have represented an eminently corruptible cadre of capitalist/neofeudalist bottom-feeders who hardly ever rejected their own "deals", but were mostly better at keeping it all hush hush.

Yep. To paraphrase the despicable Carville, it’s the system, stupid.

From Corbin Trent - “So no, I’m not interested in fighting Donald Trump. I’m interested in fighting the thing that made him and will outlast him, the system that lets a genocide run, lets the Epstein names stay buried, lets a child’s abuser walk and then promotes the man who walked him, mints fortunes off our work, and rounds up the weakest people we’ve got while calling it order. That’s the enemy. Not a man. A system.”

David Baird's avatar

Well put, Tom. The slime governing, allegedly, in what are now laissez-faire economies around the planet have been permitted to hold their positions and continue to be manipulated by the big-money, -tech, -media controllers. Throw a strong element of amorality into the mix and we finish up with ever more economic, military, environmental and resultant social disasters. And when the so-called supreme courts are bought, the sky's the limit.

Here’s a pretty good piece on why we’re headed for collapse, examining wealth vs. value, or put another way, the way consumer capitalism has blurred the line between want and need.

Patrick Powers's avatar

Trump's collection of multi-billion dollar bribes and similar income from insider trading would be pretty hard to beat. That's something I like about him : he unashamedly does it on a breathtaking scale right out in broad daylight. He's proved the Constitution is utterly powerless. Maybe now something will be done about this (especially the ubercorrupt SCROTUS). Then again, maybe instead it will get worse.

Robert Caro thinks LBJ was the former heavyweight champ of corruption. It was the basis of his power in Congress.

AnF's avatar

The amount of people I have encountered in the US who think things will "go back to normal" once Trump dies (I fully expect him to refuse to step down after the next theatrical performance we call presidental elections here) is utterly maddening.

It's not even willful ignorance, it's just straight up a mass delusion of some kind.

Patrick Powers's avatar

I see Trump as a fall guy, a figurehead. Why don't they see that he has the full support of the GOP? He's implementing their program to take over the USA then, they believe, the world. The public passively waits for things to return to normal.

I'll toot my own horn in that I predicted this years ago. The two parties were at war. Parliamentary democracy with its compromises has long disappeared. Both parties committed to "climbing the escalation ladder." Eventually one or the other would seize power in order to avoid the otherwise inevitable revenge from the other side. Since the Rs controls the military and police they would surely be the ones to take this final step, as that is what matters in such situations.

The key mechanism to hide this move is the Rs' SCROTUS almost completely disregarding the constitution. How then can the GOP be prevented from taking control of the 2026 elections? I expect they will ban the filibuster and pseudo-legally take federal control of elections. In case you haven't noticed Mr. T. with his occasional openness has publicly advocated this plan. He said it would guarantee 100 years of R victories. The bulk of the Rs is doing its damnedest to institute one-party rule. They aren't even keeping it a secret. The Ds will be helpless.

Maybe endless one-party rule begins in 2026 maybe it doesn't. The only thing that could stop it is overwhelming dissatisfaction with rising prices. Skyrocketing oil and gas prices might cost the Rs so many votes that rigging becomes impractical. That and the rapidly fading R loyalty to the shreds of the Constitution. It still carries some "soft power" with old school types. This was seen in the recent SCROTUS birthright citizenship ruling when two R justices balked at contravening the plain language of the Constitution, resulting in a too-narrow 5-4 defeat of the initiative.

Feral Finster's avatar

I have said for years that law is meaningless. Enforcement is all that matters. The Constitution has long been a dead letter.

Naturally, this has caused a lot of people to react in pious horror. In a way I can see it. Comforting lies are much more, well, comforting for humans than staring into the abyss and realizing that There Really Is Nothing There, that you are truly on your own.

Vin LoPresti's avatar

Be interesting to see if a Caro-level biographer of Trump comes along to do the kind of thorough job that Caro did on LBJ

Patrick Powers's avatar

There are few who will devote their entire working life to the investigation of one man. It seems that the fifth volume of Caro's biography of LBJ will appear only after Caro passes away. Most thorough character study ever written. You never know, someone might step up to bat after Mr. Trump is no more. It has to be long enough afterward that witnesses aren't afraid to talk but not so long that they forget or have died.

Lamentably and regrettably, that journalistic super hero finally collapsed just as Trump's Reality as elected leader sank in (having never held a Public Interest\Public Trust position with which any Presidential electorate could choose after evaluating what level of TRUST, if any to place in that trail of bad paper and WORSE PUBLIC TRUST...)

Davina's avatar

100% true. How, though can they stop it when the choice is two, with just a change of name. Same in Australia, when I first came here there was a choice of 5 parties to choose from then it became a case of either joining together, which gets rid of one party and cuts choice while hoping to get more votes. We are down to three if we count the Greens, and four if we count tge mist racist party ever. There is the collaboration between the Country party, that has totally abandoned the country people, joined with the laughably called the Liberal party, and of course, one party the liberals, is dominant over the other that get the sop of one of their members as deputy PM. The last one to hold the position got his "bit on the side" pregnant, left his wife and children, got divorced, married the pregnant one, and has spent most of his time since then as a drunkard, thankfully he left the ex-Country party and joined the absolutely worst one in this country which was founded by total racist Pauline Hanson, who is now run by Gina Rinehart, who inherited her father's millions and job, as head of business that digs up the earth with no care for wildlife habitat, and Hanson thinks Rinehart is her friend because she buys her with things that might add up to a few hours worth of the profit her company makes.

Then there is Labor, currently in power, but like so many others, it's PM has allowed himself to be entrapped and "you can all guess" by whom, much as he denies it - this man once is known to call himself a friend of Palestine. I hate to say it, but I think that the pretty face he married had vastly different ideals, and Palestine was not on her important place to protect list.

So, there you have it, the mess Australia has become politically. It was bad enough when they kept bending the knee to whatever tge US wanted, but now straight down the gurgler!

I also find it strange that over the past six months of megascandal, failure, and broken promises Mr Trump support has declined by only 10%. It's because 36% of the population likes the ICE initiative. They want foreigners ejected from the USA and approve of how this is being done. I think they believe this will improve their standard of living. I say they will be disappointed in this, and that Mr. T's meddling with the world economy will cause a worldwide depression. We will see whether they stick with him when everything becomes much more expensive. There will be a major effort to blame it all on Iran and China. Maybe this will succeed. Maybe it won't.

Feral Finster's avatar

At least 30%* of the US electorate are full-blown cultists. To be fair to them, their support is not rational, nor is it based on rational concerns. Rather, like the cultists they are, they are for anything the cult leader is for. Until the cult leader is against it. Then they are against it.

The gyrations surrounding The Epstein Files is most instructive. Remember Bondi and Vance waving dossiers in the air? MAGA drooled like Bassett Hounds at the thought. Then, once it became clear that the release of The Files would damage Dear Leader, they insisted that there was nothing there.

If today Trump were to begin and end every speech with "All praise to Lord Satan!", his cult would stop claiming that Trump has a direct line to Jesus and start wearing Dracula capes.

Rationality, consistency, truth never had anything to do with it. This is just basic human nature.

*Around 30% of the electorate are bull goose trumpers. These, however, are not the only political cultists out there. Team D cultists come prominently to mind, the ones who so recently ascribed superpowers to a senile halfwit and Willie Brown's former mistress.

Patrick Powers's avatar

The Economist says 36% approval. They do a new poll every five days or so. https://www.economist.com/interactive/trump-approval-tracker Mr. Trump's approval rating is only seven points worse than Biden's at the same point of his reign. I suppose Mr. T's supporters see him as the lesser evil.

For me the US has never been this super power, just a country full of people who believe in their own propoganda but, unfortunately with such a lack in education they don't understand that they are being taken for a ride by money hungry new wealthy, who now choose who leads the country, and I don't mean only which party but who they choose to head the party. At the moment, the promise Drumpf made to get himself into the presidency has given them plenty. Now though his greed for himself is overriding any ^promise^ he gave them and they won't tolerate that for long, after all he came from nothing in their eyes - a lowlife housing huckster, married a prostitute because she looked good on his arm, but she brought her Russian handler with her, how else would he have got into the white house?

A country only 250 years old, by the count of white folk, is so corrupt it is eating itself. The sooner it dies the better for the planet. Same with Drumpf, hopefully once he's back in hell where he belongs a bit of sanity can arrive. Of course that depends on the people and whether or not they want a clean life, or one dictated by people that should be in prison.

So, no the machine is not intelligent, not even when built to look more human-like.
