I have always rejected the excuse that poverty, struggle, or alienation somehow cause people to become racist, hateful, or violent. That narrative has always served one purpose: to absolve bad people of responsibility for their choices. It paints them as victims instead of what they are, namely adults making conscious decisions, including the decision to hate.
There are millions of people who are economically devastated, disenfranchised, shut out of opportunity, working two jobs and still unable to pay rent or provide a future for their kids. And you know what? They don’t turn into bigots. They don’t fetishize cruelty. They don’t salivate at the idea of crushing the most vulnerable people in society or buying alligator alcatraz merch so that they fantasize about immigrants escaping the swamp to be torn to shreds.
I myself am angry at Obama's betrayal of the working class, and I am not taking it out onm black people.
But the fact that so many others are, and that this gave rise to MAGA, makes something crystal clear: these people didn’t become racist and hateful. They always were. They just finally felt permission to show it. MAGA didn’t radicalize them, it unmasked them.
And yet people keep making excuses. Many on the Left insist on casting MAGA as some kind of victim class. That is a dangerous lie. These people are not confused. They are not misled. They are going into this eyes wide open, because they ultimately like the message and agree with it. They admire the hatred, they agree with the racism, the cruelty, the authoritarianism, and yes even the open, sleazy misogyny. They don’t just tolerate it. They cheer it.
People do what they wanna do and act how they want to. No one is making them.
"People do what they wanna do and act how they want to."
Not really. That's why propaganda is employed to the extent it is. That's why new narratives are being constantly invented. That's why people are being gaslighted. That's why history is being revisioned and glorified.
Many people are unaware of how they are being manipulated by those in power that are calling the shots.
If it was simply a matter of conscious choice, the world would be a very different place than it is.
being manipulated to be believe in the wrong facts is one thing, but unless there is something inside you that is already damaged and broken, a healthy person does not become a hateful racist because times are hard. or because someone else told you so. You dont celebrate alligator alcatraz and gloat when you see immigrant parents separated from their children unless you are already halfway there. You dont go around blaming a man who had a knee on his neck for 8 minutes and say he deserved it.
If it is so easy to switch people on a dime then the problem are ultimately people!!!! They want to believe this shit and were looking for an excuse all along. And really if it is so easy to activate hate and racism in people so quickly, then we are lost already as a species.
This idea that people dont have a choice than just be blind sheep supporting horrific narratives and actions etc, then that does not speak favorably of our species and its future. Remember Adama in BSG said "it is not enough to survive. You have to be worthy of survival". Your comment is absolving people of accountability, which does not exactly prove the point that they are victims.
You're locked into binary black-or-white thinking. People make choices both consciously and unconsciously. There is nature and nurture. People are not born out of the womb 1 minute into life to automatically detect (or understand) race, hate, etc. Many have been indoctrinated (either through their societies, families, peer groups, nations, whatever).
Hence, people always have a choice. The question is - how much of their choice is 'deliberate thinking and contemplation', and how much do 'external influences' impact their choices?
And external influences means all the things I mentioned in my first comment (and many more influences that I didn't mention).
it only takes a few generations to turn it around and an awful lot of concerted effort (and money) to keep things as they are. the world is bigger than the us/west and history is longer than the us/western centralized empire.
i always start from the premise that cia/us empire is at work in such matters and then try to find counter-indications. it's easier than the other way around or starting from a neutral position. this (communist leader trying to put the slightest restrictions on imperial tech-giants) seems a 'no-brainer'. western media position are indeed often a give-away.
Thanks Ginnie, You say it as it is. No one is making them racist, full of hatred and malevolent. They get easily influenced by people in 'high' places who peddle these vicious ideas because they are always inclined towards that way of thinking.
If you yourself are angry at Obama's betrayal of his Hope and Change promise, how can you not than sympathize those who bought the MAGA promise? Yes we can criticize the ignorant masses for being so foolish to believe the promises of politicians but that would go against our nature, if when we feel we have no alternative we will believe the lies, what is our alternative?
So we`ll ignore the all the ugly obvious realities which if we were not so desperate , we would easily see that our so called democracies are completely corrupt. . The foundation of most democracies is representation by proxy representatives, but when your representatives are only concerned with their own interest and those of their donors interests there is no representation, no democracy.
People do not do as the want, they do as the can, given their circumstances
"If you yourself are angry at Obama's betrayal of his Hope and Change promise, how can you not than sympathize those who bought the MAGA promise"
--> Because the difference is, I did not turn into MAGA or racist because a black president betrayed me and squandered his mandate to help out wall street!!!!! Duh.
Being angry is valid, what is not valid is turning into a racist POS and taking that anger out on black people, poor people, muslims. LGBT etc. instead of at those who betrayed you. People like you dont wanna accept that some people are just racists and shit. You wanna pretend they are all innocent little victims without autonomy and decision making ability, subject to the whims of others - which is not only infantilizing but absolve them of accountability. This is the same argument they made at the turn of the century when the masses turned to KKK and lynchings as enjoyable public events/picnics.
people like you, ginny are still brainwashed by individualism. You think "individuals make a choice to hate". That is completely untrue. Individuals are brought up in societies, families, that teach them hate. And they even taught you to deny the humanity of people that YOU hate (AKA republicans)
Yes, I agree, anger born of betrayal is valid, and that is admirable that you yourself are not as your put it "a racist POS".
And your correct again, in part at least, people like me, "dont wanna accept that some people are just racists and shit".
So I`ll not pretend , for you have so aptly demonstrated that their are no "innocent little victims" here.
It is a real shame, though shame, that your anger has made you blind and unable to engage in civil discourse without insulting a stranger who you know nothing about, simply because they have a different opinion.
Perhaps I failed to to understand your reply well. English is not my first language , so I mistakenly assumed you were describing "me" when you wrote "people like you... "
Now if you actually knew me, you would understand that I don`t take offense , well not easily, but I have given it often, perhaps too often. Though seldom intentionally, in my mind that is , of course we can not control how others will perceive our comments, can we?
I appreciate that with words are not often well understood, so please if you would explain why your reply needed to be condescending in your reply, I am interested to know?
You see, I get the impression based on your reply that it was just to revolting for you I would dare suggest that those who felt betrayed by the lie of Hope & Change, might share similar disappoint as those who now feel betrayed by lie of Make America Great Again? Heaven forbid we that both sides ever come to realization that they`re both being betrayed , over and over.
I read Caitlin`s post because I agree with her anger at the injustices she so elegantly writes about, but I do not agree when her anger becomes hate and degenerates , diminishes people. So be those people, those animals, those POS, those racists, those degenerates , those terrorists , or whatever dehumanizing label we apply to others, I don`t hate anyone, I haven`t walked in their shoes, nor they, mine.
No one is denigrating and diminishing people, they are being called out!. There is a difference. Also, no one called them terrorists either or degenerates and I certainly would never insult animals by comparing these people to them. Those are YOUR words. That said, yes if people cheer genocide and abuse of immigrants and separating their children from the parents and harassing them and inflicting cruelty on them then I do judge them as bad, shitty persons.
I completely disagree. Take the recent colour revolution by 'Gen Z' (ie young people from age 13) in Nepal which over threw their government. Yes, someone took their vulnerability, youth and naivety and made them angry at their government, organised them, funded them, trained them and stirred them some more via social media. Were you never young and foolish?
Give me the boy until he's 7 and I'll give you the man and all that.
We have to do what China has done ie ban X, youtube, Google and FB. Control the information space that so heavily divides, manipulates and controls both young and older minds.
I realise the irony that I'm not posting a youtube video that explains this but until we have our own platforms...
I would hope each nation wouldn’t have to ‘control’ what their citizens put on social media- unless inciting to violence etc- but the platforms wouldn’t be owned by rich Americans with agendas. Rather they would make revenue that stayed in their own nations (perhaps even state owned) and their people wouldn’t be vulnerable to colour revolutions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgZXwXIVZTk
Very good question. Not the US deep state for starters because they are manipulating us, getting support for their proxy wars, regime changing and doing genocides all over the world. I imagine it would be on a Chinese model that, ie nations would have their own platforms that couldn’t be influence by NGOs from other countries.
? ‘They’ the US deep state (aka the white western patriarchy) already control all the information. They use social media to stir people up and get them to support ministries of truth banning free speech- if it’s against racist white people for example. If nations had their own platforms, like China and Russia do, then they wouldn’t be so vulnerable to this manipulation.
Making out that this is somehow banning free speech is party of the f-ing propaganda! If nations had their own platforms they and their people would stand a fighting chance against the deep state interests in fossil fuels, animal ag, pharma (who created a whole ‘pandemic’ via social media), tech, AI, entertainment, porn, drug and sex trafficking, gambling, arms and finance who at present control almost everything and everyone- apart from Russia, China, Venezuela and Iran- which is why they’re in, or soon to be in, hot wars with them.
controlling social media and BANNING it (you literally used the word ban while you deny it now) is affecting free speech. You are not going to arrive at a better outcome just banning people from talking to each other on platforms you don't like. That is what censorship is. And it never takes you closer to justice, or democracy or a better society. Only open dialogue does. The state should not determine, or be the arbiters, of what is good and acceptable information and speech and then curated it to you.
"We have to curtail speech to protect people" is the age old cry of all oppressors. That's what every censor says: that it is for your own good. This is what they did under Biden too. But it is not, it is for the good of the oppressor. As Snowden said, the answer to bad speech is better speech, not censorship and bans. And free speech laws exist* to protect unpopular speech, not popular speech.
Having safeguards to protect illegal activity like trafficking etc is different from just flat out banning platforms and exchange of ideas.
If you support censorship, then admit it and own it. Coming here pretending you don't is ridiculous.
And If you want to see a perfect example of Obama's betrayal of the working class, this speech in 2009 after the financial crisis is a good place to start:
What part of 'illegal alien' do you not understand? What part of the supply of labor versus the demand for labor determines the wage scale do you not understand? What part of importing poverty does not reduce poverty do you not comprehend?
And we, Westerners, do not apply international laws to them. There would be no destruction, no murdering in Gaza, no colonisation in the Westbank. We let them perpetrate all these crimes in front of our eyes.
oh they were white, so worthy of course. Bill and others like him mean black and brown people when they talk immigrants. They dont mean people from Sweden, Germany of white South Afrikaans who were flown here a few months ago by the way. They dont even mean the Ukrainians who have come into this country in droves since the start of the special military operation by Russia.
All this talk about labor market blah blah is just a dog whistle. They really only mean non white anglo saxons.
you fool - you really think these corporations are lining up to pay people $25 an hour and shower them with great salaries and top benefits if it weren't for illegals. JFC. How dumb are you people? Really. I am amazed that with this level of thinking some of you are able to get out of bed in the morning and find the front door.
That said, what does your comment have to do with what I said? I wasnt talking about labor supply. I was talking about hating immigrants. It seems to me like you are saying because immigrants allegedly take away white peoples' ability to make more money, abusing them, mistreating them, throwing them into alligator infested gulags was ok? Because of the supply of labor vs the demand for labor that determines wages...it is ok to do all these things to immigrants?
I guess that is one way to prove my point dopshit.
"Many on the left" does not include socialists. Socialists make no excuses for MAGA maniacs whatsoever. I suspect that those you refer to as "left" are in fact the pseudo-left, i.e., Democrats and liberals. They are not left at all.
I don't think anyone can say their MAGA lot havdpe had a trying forced upon them. They went willingly to Drumpf's rallies that were more about himself off than what he'd do for them - so odd they didn't even notice it think about that rally(?) Where he stopped talking and stood so-called dancing on stage, looking so bloody foolish I couldn't believe that people stayed watching that. People did, however, start to walk out early from a number of his me, me, me ramblings some also said they'd had enough after his non- Presidency. Wonder how their feeling now as he puts so many out of work, and that was before he started rounding up legal, as well as illegal migrants, tell me - what did they ever do to him that needs revenge?
The sooner the US fails the better for everyone on the planet.
And I could not listen to those two women spouting about hate speech while speaking hate speech and, Charlie Kisrk was full on hate speech until a few weeks ago when his eyes opened - a d zi've only heard about him after his death but the clips that have been put out show he was a smug, misogynistic racist.
You don't think people in MAGA are victims? Even people radicalized by nazism are victims. Marixst analysis is useful (even as I am against marxist political theory) to know when people are acting against the interests of their class. For example, Trump promised to lower domestic prices, then put in massive tariffs. MAGA people were lied to. Then they have sunken cost fallacy and culture wars to justify that lie. But that Trump lied is an inevitable conclusion. He said he would work for peace and immediately threatened to invade Canada.
Nobody is taking out their frustration with being "disenfranchised" on your precious blacks and QWERTYUIOP perverts, lady. Those groups are disliked for the problems THEY cause, and the political class is hated for THEIR misdeeds.
And by the way "racism" is just noticing patterns.
Nobody is taking out their frustration with being "disenfranchised" on your precious blacks and QWERTYUIOP perverts, lady. Those groups are disliked for the problems THEY cause, and the political class is hated for THEIR misdeeds.
I’m sorry but I disagree. ‘These people’ are all of us. All of us have the potential to be the things you described given the right kind of manipulation. Racism and ‘hate’ is rooted in fear and fear is a natural emotion from the survival instinct. Our nature makes us predisposed to manipulation by fear tactics. So, we’re fooled but worse, we’re committed fools.
Well then by that logic, there should never be any accountability and no one can be said to have done and said harmful things since everyone is just a victim of circumstance and manipulation and who cannot help it. I mean people are also not coming out of their mother's wombs murderers or rapists, things happen to them that make them kill. So we should I guess excuse that too since they are all of us and it can happen to all of us too. Netanyahu himself is probably just another victim deserving of our compassion and understanding. Same with Jeffrey Epstein. I hear he was a kind, chubby boy.
In seriousness though, here's the thing: yes people are shaped by their environments, traumas, ideologies, and systems , and that does matter. It matters if we want to prevent future harm or understand the context.
At the same time, people still have agency and must be held accountable. No matter what led them to their actions, those actions still harmed others. Understanding how they got there doesn't cancel out consequences for the behavior or erase the need for justice, truth, or accountability. Because what about their victims? Wanna sit here feel sorry for the alligator alcatraz cheerleaders, what about the people in alligator gulag?
Being poor and angry doesn't buy you carte blanche to do whatever you like and then still demand understanding and compassion for your abhorrent behavior. For every person who finds purpose in hate and causing harm and being cheerleaders of atrocities, there are people who did not go that way. Whatever it is that makes people do the things they do, it can get very philosophical and is an age old question, but the bottom line is that we dont have time to get philosophical. None of this absolves anyone of accountability. They sure as hell are not victims. You take your kids to public lynching in the South in the 20s, I don't care how you got there, it is wrong and I will judge you for it!
Nobody is excusing bad behavior. However, I feel like the trend toward pessimism, cynicism, and even hatred toward the ‘others’ is leading us all to a very bad place (far worse). I understand your feelings, but it’s a divisive attitude. The right does the same thing, ‘those libs just want to normalize sexual deviant behavior and rape our children’. I know it’s fluffy, but the only way out of this is to find common ground on issues and understand the drivers of hatred and that it’s a ruse to control us…keep the peasants fighting.
n The Handmaid's Tale, Bradley Whitford’s character puts it plainly:
“Everything you value, all the things you're clinging to: democracy, liberty, justice, all that feel-good crap defined by a bunch of slave-owners talking about how all men are created equal, all of that collapsed under the weight of late-term capitalism and rampant consumerism. It broke our pretty little planet and almost ended the human race. And Gilead, for all of our faults, we fixed that particular problem. Unfortunately, I had to use religious nut-jobs as a delivery system and I underestimated their depravity.”
See **this** is what you get when you make deals with fanatics and bigots in exchange for fair wages and a livable planet. It's a Faustian bargain, the same one like Lawrence made. And the end result wasn’t justice, it was Gilead.
So yes, you are excusing bad behavior. Let's be clear: I'm calling for accountability, not for offering passes to people who do harm, support harm, or stand by while harm is done, especially when they willingly support ideologies that dehumanize others. These people are not passive victims. They are not helpless. They are choosing cruelty. And trying to reframe them as somehow misunderstood or lacking agency is, frankly, dishonest and dangerous and infantalizes them and robs them of their agency. .
I’m all for building solidarity with anyone who stands against injustice: we don’t need to agree on everything, but we *must* agree on the fundamentals: that Black and Brown lives matter, that Muslims are not inherently dangerous, that immigrants are not to blame for society’s problems, and that queer people, women, and marginalized communities deserve safety, dignity, and humanity. If someone rejects that, they are not a misunderstood potential ally. They are part of the problem.
Politics isn’t just a casual opinion like preferring action movies over dramas. It reflects a person’s values and ethics. If someone supports locking up homeless people, mocks victims of police brutality, or continues to gloat over the deaths of people like George Floyd or Trayvon Martin, that tells you exactly who they are. These aren’t just “different views.” They are expressions of dehumanization, cruelty, and violent indifference. And no, I don’t want to stand in solidarity with people like that, and I don’t consider them comrades or allies.
There are countless people who suffer and struggle in life who don’t turn to hate, scapegoating, or bootlicking billionaires. Struggle doesn’t excuse becoming a monster. And frankly, it’s not my job, or anyone else’s, to coddle those who choose hatred over humanity. If they want to become better people, that’s on them. No one owes them a hand-holding redemption arc.
Yes, workers should unite. but not at the expense of the marginalized. Solidarity that requires sacrificing the dignity of Muslims, Black people, LGBTQ+ folks, immigrants, or women isn’t solidarity at all. It’s just more oppression wrapped in the language of unity.
"One of the many naive mistakes I made when I first started this commentary gig was taking Trump supporters at their word when they said they support things like free speech, ending wars, and dismantling the deep state. I thought they can’t be all bad, because they’re saying they’re on the same side as me with many important issues that I care about."
Oh, Caitlin, I love you to death but you were oh so naive! :)
As a Canadian who has observed the US media and political landscape quite intensely since I was a news-obsessed teenager, I can tell you that going back all the way to at least 1995 (when Newt Gingrich came onto the scene), all Republicans lie, cheat, and steal.
And let's not forget their golden rule: Every accusation is a confession.
From McCarthyism to "Freedom Fries".
From "Mission Accomplished" to fighting "anti-semitism".
I always compared the Republicans more to the Taliban, actually.
Democrats are no saints, obviously, but they don't have that quite powerful culture war card to play. Plus, as I've mentioned before, right-wingers, seem to get a pass if they lie, cheat, or steal. There are basically no consequences for their terrible actions.
The Republicans are very good at screaming bloody murder and getting enough attention from the media to give their manufactured outrage legitimacy. Meanwhile, the Democrats have AIPAC-funded Zionists and "liberal" commentators like the NYT's Ezra Klein who wrote that "Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way".
Once again I have to ask, how the fuck does this nightmare end?
"One of the many naive mistakes I made,,,,,etc" I re-read that several times because I didn't think Caitlin could have been talking about herself. I am also Canadian, probably a lot older than you, Ginnie, because I actually remember the McCarthy years. I was just a little kid, but even to me, all the rhetoric seemed a little weird. Especially when I could look around me and see the racist, sexist, anti everything that was not white, Christian, male and aiming for a huge bank account behaviour of people around me. Our world has just continued on that path and not just in the US, either. Canadians, I think, way too easily try to portray themselves as "the nice ones". But people of colour, indigenous people, homeless people, people with mental health issues are not treated very well here either. I have lived in border towns for parts of my life and I did not find the American people to be much different than me. Capitalism is capitalism whether it is in Canada, the US, the UK, Europe or in any of the BRICS countries.
Thank you for that Susan T. I have also lived in Canada, the U.S. (and several other countries). I can corroborate everything you say above - very true!
I don't think Genie was the Canadian you were replying to, Susan. It was me! :)
I agree that capitalism is always the elephant in the room and the root of most of our problems, but the US has always been HYPER-capitalistic, with their focus on individualism and glorification of the "lifestyles of the rich and famous".
Our Canadian medicare system, while far from perfect, would never fly in the US. The way even the watered-down, lobbyist-written Obamacare was vilified by Republicans is a good example. Instead of seeing it as good thing, it was called "socialized medicine", where the S word has somehow seen as evil (unless it's for the rich).
As Canadians, we were all taught the basic difference between the US and Canada: a melting pot vs a mosaic
A key difference is in the historical immigration narratives of the United States and Canada, with the "melting pot" metaphor representing assimilation into a single dominant culture in the US, while the "cultural mosaic" for Canada signifies diverse cultures coexisting and maintaining their unique identities within the nation.
The US model encourages immigrants to shed old traditions for a unified American culture, whereas Canada's mosaic ideal encourages the preservation of distinct cultural backgrounds as integral parts of the nation's overall identity. is a melting pot, while Canada was a mosaic.
Thankfully, I think this definition still holds true today, but just have a look at what happening in the UK at the moment!
Since the 60s in the US, pride in belonging to a particular group has developed. Ethnic studies has played a powerful role in education at all levels, at least in California. We think of Canada as benevolent, but the appalling stories of forced Indian schools belie the idea that Canada respected differences and followed the mosaic model any more than did the US. Australia is another absolute horror story. Britain, as we know, clearly displayed their belief in white supremacy around the world.
As long as the ethnic group is POC. Otherwise, its considered a big homogeneous blob of privileged whiteness.
In part, because somewhere along the way, the idea of disadvantage caused by class completely disappeared (except, and only when, when it could be paired, and locked in, with that POC, as if the two terms were equivalent).
Why the New Left / Democrats completely abandoned class and set white lower classes against identity groups *and* vice versa, instead of *combining* them together to create an unbeatable super-party, is the $64k question one must ask. Yes, the DEMOCRATS did this, in parallel with the Republicans' own machinations. To the extent the any supposedly "purer" Leftists support this bifurcation, THEY TOO are disingenuous monsters.
O see what you mean, but I don't think ethnic studies contributed very much to the great culture war. All the topics used to divide us were harped on for 40 years by the Gop's hate and lies media. Meanwhile, the Democratic leadership went along for the ride, hoarding power, growing their stock portfolios and not caring about the shrinking middle class and growing poverty and homelessness. I was so disappointed in Obama. Biden was making an effort until 10/7.
As I understand it, when I was a child we already had the functional equivalent of what is now ridiculed as "socialized medicine" in the US with the original Blue Cross / Blue Shield doctor-run single-payer (for all practical purposes) system. And it worked damned well. But then beginning in the '80s we got snowed by the promise of for-profit "health maintenance organizations", and it's been downhill from there.
That's why both the well-compensated grifters and the well-propagandized alike now say it needs to be either Obamacare or private insurance warlords running amok.
I think that sometmes Canadians have been smug about what has been better here than in the US and that has put us at more risk. I have worked with people living in poverty and observed how people are treated in general. There is plenty of racism and classism here. We have been smug in saying that we are better than the Americans in how we treat people. But are we? Look at the residential schools. Look at how indigenous people today are being arrested for trying to protect the land that was stolen from them. Rather than putting on the smug act, we need to stop mistreating people. Not to mention that our healthcare system is rapidly headed in the direction of the American healthcare system. And now we have a PM who openly bows to the pressure from the insane US leader that is there today. And you are right, MM. It was you that I was replying to.
The problem is that western imperialistic capitalistic "culture" promotes most vile, incompetent, dishonest and corrupt a$$kissers. So most "leaders" are complete imbeciles that believe laws of nature (technical and social) can be violated at will. And most honest intelligent humans don't want to be close to this pile of garbage. There is a saying: Shit (feces) floats on the surface.
I disagree. I am registered independent, but not all Republicans are liars just like not all Democrats are liars. Who does it help to generalize like that?
Humanity ends with a bang. Too many lies, misery, and injustices accumulated over centuries. Just look at that ugly genocidal illegitimate entity of shitsrael or what the US does daily over the entire globe. IMO modern human societies are for the most part structurally unstable and unsustainable.
When we stop demonizing people on the basis of which of two power-corrupted parties they have been hoodwinked into choosing by psychopathic divide-and-conquer artists. That applies to good-faith Republican voters just as it does good-faith Democratic voters. Calling all Republicans (and just to be clear, I'm not one) "liars, cheats and thieves", mainly on the basis of what worldview they adopt, to live what they sincerely believe is morally correct (no matter how twisted you/we think it is), is certainly falling into this trap. Don't be them.
All we have to remember is that the deep state (US based interests in fossil fuels, arms, finance. AI etc) controls continuity of agenda- for full spectrum global dominance of the white western christian patriarchy. They play left against right to this end.
It's not worth getting into the weeds- all politicians, all MSM, most alternative media and all algorithms in social media are locked into this goal.
Canadians always have this superiority complex. And isnt caitlin australian?
As if the Canadian government was any better than biden/trump, they applauded a nazi SS officer in parliament because "muh ukraine", and gave weapons (always and everywhere)
CJ>>"Eventually you learn that anyone who aligns themselves with either mainstream party in any way is someone you can just dismiss as a compliant empire stooge."
🎯💯 Precisely Caitlin! Both the Democratic and Republican parties are the parties of U.S. Imperialism, neo-Colonialism, and U.S. Empire global hegemony.
The SYSTEM needs to be brought down. REVOLUTION is the only way forward. Reform does not work in instances of hopelessness that the U.S. Empire currently represents.
Right, Chang! The two parties are just wings on one very sick duck. The downward spiral continues and, with the militarisation of major cities, the fascist project continues apace. Thought-crime is now real and if you actually express those 'incorrect' thoughts about St Charlie, well, tough about your career prospects, tough about the Internal Revenue audit, passport, incitement charges....etc.
"The two-party system is a manufactured illusion of choice. The U.S. claims to be a democracy, but in reality it's one of the most effective psychological control systems in the world. You're given two options — Republican versus Democrat — so it feels like you have a choice, but in reality both serve the same corporate overlords."
Rreplaced with a system (or systems) that focus on DISTRIBUTED power, checks on power, respect for the planet and its resources (rather than profits), and so much more.
Many people have thought about this for a long period of time. There are alternatives - the important thing is that all these alternatives focus on 'preventing concentration of power in the hands of the few' (the very thing that you are rightly concerned about).
Agreed, but sadly other models have yet to produce something yielding progressive results. Surely the corporate, billionaire-owned, right-wing media plays a role in this.
Life (and politics is life and life is politics) is not about ready-made models to be swapped in-and-out.
All systems evolve. Whatever replaces Capitalism will also evolve. Nothing is ever perfect. But (almost) everything is (almost) better than the current systems that we have.
Also, what are the METRICS you are using to measure 'progress'? Human progress? Cultural progress? Technological progress? Planetary equilibrium? Harmony with other species? Or progress in profits? Or progress in accumulation of Capital? Or progress in peace?
First, the priorities have to be established (by the majority, not the minority - as is the current situation). Then, systems can be designed (it's a process) based on these priorities. And one of the priorities MUST BE - the prevention of accumulation/concentration of power.
As a Canadian, I long ago lost hope in the US, though I will allow a small glimmer of hope for Mandami's election in NYC in November.
More "interesting" is to see what's been happening in the UK over the past 12 months. Labour, a traditionally centre-left political party was highjacked by the right wing and purged of all it's progressive members, including former leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was accused of "anti-semitism".
Labour won a landslide victory in 2024 but have tried to imitate the far-right Reform party with disastrous results. The former have tanked in the polls while the latter is surging.
But the Greens have just elected a progressive, media-savvy leader who actually fights back. And Corbyn has co-founded a new progressive party.
I doubt very much that change (at least the REAL change that people desperately need) will come through the 'electoral process' of our so-called democracies (regardless of the parties involved).
Any system structured to celebrate the will of one over another gives rise to the same dynamics. In fact, the very conception of "system", a self-reproducing boundary to separate an inside from an outside by consuming the latter, is a toxic pattern we can see riddling the schemes of the vast majority of these thinkers. Even the republican form is inherently toxic in this very way.
Absolutely. Democrats and liberals did exactly the same thing when they had power. Just now the definition of "hate speech" is just a different set of friends (who only get the benefits of law) and enemies (who only are given punishments under color of law).
This is merely a question of who has the whip hand.
Caitlin, we are in McCarthyism 2.0 (or is it 3.0?) territory now. We've been here before. We've seen how POWER weaponizes hate to sow division (between conservatives and liberals - since the LEFT is almost non-existent in the U.S.) so that it can distract us and remain unchallenged.
People, please remember this -> Observe POWER, scrutinize the ELITES, TPTB, the Empire Managers, the Oligarchs that care more about global capital than nationalities.
Dig deeper and ask yourself some questions -> WHY are those in power SO INTENT on using the Charlie Kirk assassination (or murder or whatever word you want to use here) to forment MORE hate, anger, distrust, mayhem, and worse?
(1) Is it to distract everyone from what is happening in Gaza, the Genocide, and the Middle-East?
(2) Is it to make the LIBERALS and CONSERVATIVES fight against each other while the POWER ELITE erode MORE rights than they already have?
(3) Is it an attempt at MORE authoritarianism, fascism, and totalitarianism?
(4) Power ALWAYS wants more CONTROL.
So MANY important questions to be asked and thought about...think deeper! Question POWER (regardless of ideology)!
I think the Grayzone are going down a rabbit hole. Blaming Israel for what the US does. The US controls Israel in everything. The pressure is mounting from Hollywood and all over. The US could throw Israel and Bibi right under the bus and take direct control of Palestine to save them with their brand of 'democracy'. Trump has hinted before that they'd go into Gaza themselves. From 7 months ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apu97YrB_5c US will take over and own Gaza.
Thank you Jo Waller! I agree with you. Though I would say that there is a symbiotic relationship between the two. Israel benefits in some ways, and the U.S. benefits in some ways.
Also, Israel has the habit of pushing the envelope to see what it can get away with (many instances of such behavior in history). It (Israel) has found the perfect administration (the current Trump regime) to let it get away with (almost) anything.
Time will tell if and when the U.S. will draw the line (somewhere) with Israel, or if Israel will succeed in taking the U.S. down with it.
In 1968, the Israeli philosopher and devout Orthodox Jew Yeshayahu Leibowitz warned that Israel’s occupation would corrupt its soul, turning it into what he called a nation of “Judeo-Nazis.” He foresaw what few dared to say: when a people builds its identity on domination and militarism, it will mirror the very evils it once suffered.
Today, Gaza is not just under siege — it is a modern concentration camp. Two million people trapped, starved, bombed, and silenced. Journalists executed. Children buried under rubble. And any American who dares to even question this brutality, like Charlie Kirk recently did, finds themselves targeted by the Zionist power machine.
Leibowitz’s prophecy has come true. The mask has fallen. Israel no longer hides its genocidal intent — it flaunts it. And anyone who refuses silence is branded an enemy.
The question isn’t whether Leibowitz was right. The question is: how long will the world watch a genocide unfold in Gaza and do nothing?
Ok so one thing we can do right now is deluge all available channels--representatives and senators, the White House, the FBI and ABC and all other alphabet agencies that could have anything to say, local and state law enforcement and governments, the army and the National Guard: and insist that Betar, Canary Mission, and all likeminded groups, and all hasbara, lawfare, and AIPAC and AIPAC-like efforts, be rooted out and shut dpwn immediately, visas revoked, etc. The full effort described by J D Vance should be brought to bear on them all.
Betar and Canary Mission have been terrorizing Americans.
Hasbara originating from within Israel has deemed our free speech a military concern and has deemed its attempts to dictate our thoughts and consciences--both our public's and our government officials'-- to be military actions conducted as part of its war. Hasbara are a threat to us and must be ejected.
AIPAC has terrorized our politicians and has caused our country to give money to Israel it uses to pursue that same war it conducts on us, and to create conflicts that result in loss of American life as well as loss of American standing and policy strengths dating back to the 1940s at a minimum, and have impoverished our tax coffers at Israel's expense. (Individual corporations that may benefit from that arrangement are of no value to the American people and are not entitled to benefit in that way, and may be breaking the law since Israel has been warring on us for some time).
We must take his statement seriously and use it. It is now a tool for people to use and I guarantee you, this general approach is one way the Zionists have gained the power they currently wield. So don't whine about it, see its sharp edges and use them. And use your citizenship. The Zionists started using theirs before the ink was dry, and they'd lied and thrown incessant fits--practically riots--to get our government to change the rules so they could obtain that status. Outdo them.
"Eventually you learn that anyone who aligns themselves with either mainstream party in any way is someone you can just dismiss as a compliant empire stooge."
Well said! I certainly hope Trump's recent moves (and the lack of anything of substance from the Dems about these moves) to take away free speech and freedom of expression will expose the truth to the world of the duopoly's real purpose, that is, maintaining the empire at all costs. It's certainly not "democracy".
This has nothing to do with Charlie Kirk. It has everything to do with getting MAGA to support the killing of free speech. Like e.g. banning statements like “I support Palestine”. Just look at this proposal for a new bill that will place all the power to revoke US citizens’ passports in the hands of the Secretary of State - democrat or republican…
This is Trump the dictator people were raising the alarm about.
Activists advocating for human rights are branded and treated as terrorist while real terrorist such as former AQ number two ''Jolani'' now receives a warm welcome when visiting the US
No warm welcome for UN special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese who has been placed under sanctions by the US, denied entry.
TRUPMPs MAGA America is the only nation in the world that has allowed a Foreign Occupier State like Israel to totally control our country so much that they force America leaders to put laws
in place to oppress and restrict our citizens, take away Americans freedom of speech ,our constitutional rights to Protest injustice, where we cant criticize the Israel Genocide or their Racist Zionist supremacist figures ,but we can criticize God, and even the MAGA President ,and anyone else in the world without fear of going to prison for up to 25 years and charged hefty fine. We now have Americans losing their Jobs for saying 'Stop or end the Genocide of a innocent Palestinian People or opposing this tyrannical control of our people.
Not even the most tyrannical state would ever allow a foreign entity to have that kind of control on them ,doing to them what Israel and our leaders are doing to us.
This kind of total submission to a foreign state is unheard of. Never in history of the world has there ever been this kind of Madness. I am wondering is this going to be the norm for Americans to live under, or will Americans rise up against this Tyranny forced upon us by the Foreign Israeli state that a lot $$$ our tax money goes to support their never ending wars and our oppression?. This is sheer Tyranny by the Spiritual and Morally Bankrupt Zionist Supremacist controlled State of America
Or… continues with the long-planned police State implementation, part of which will be rollbacks of the 1st Amendment, and more extensive use of blacklists.
"...channel all the anger we have.."
I thought that Stephen Miller's racist, ethnocentric and xenophobic immigration policies were already doing that... But just when you think that they could sink no lower, they inevitably prove you wrong.
To be fair, it should be noted that under Joe Biden, we'd already seen this all starting. Riley Gaines being attacked at San Francisco State University, and the 6th protestors should have raised more dissent amongst both the Democrats, and the actual left.
You're correct about both parties being Empire simps. Frank Zappa rightly called them the Entertainment wing of the Military-Industrial Complex. Nowadays it's Ray McGovern's MICIMATT.
I remember reading once (I can’t remember who said it) that the lies fascists tell are not what they believe to be true, but what they need to be true in order to justify the actions that they already plan to take.
Activists from 44 countries have launched the largest civilian flotilla in history at the end of August in an effort to break Israel’s siege on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to the starving population of the enclave.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, along with three allied initiatives, will send dozens of boats from Spanish ports on 31 August and Tunisian ports on 4 September, aiming to establish a humanitarian corridor and confront what organizers call Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.
Agreed. Also, that susceptibility to propaganda has nothing to do with what beliefs one holds. There's no magic immunity by way of ideology.
Yep youtube.com/watch?v=WgZXwXIVZTk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fjowaller.substack.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY
i always start from the premise that cia/us empire is at work in such matters and then try to find counter-indications. it's easier than the other way around or starting from a neutral position. this (communist leader trying to put the slightest restrictions on imperial tech-giants) seems a 'no-brainer'. western media position are indeed often a give-away.
Thanks Ginnie, You say it as it is. No one is making them racist, full of hatred and malevolent. They get easily influenced by people in 'high' places who peddle these vicious ideas because they are always inclined towards that way of thinking.
Some is making them racist- the US deep state youtube.com/watch?v=WgZXwXIVZTk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fjowaller.substack.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY
it is not 'natural', imo though. it is (culturally) fabricated and it can be undone.
It is a real shame, though shame, that your anger has made you blind and unable to engage in civil discourse without insulting a stranger who you know nothing about, simply because they have a different opinion.
nobody insulted you. I didn't call you anything. You are just making that up...lol
I realise the irony that I'm not posting a youtube video that explains this but until we have our own platforms...
youtube.com/watch?v=WgZXwXIVZTk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fjowaller.substack.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY
Who decides who controls "information space", and why?
If you think that our ‘information space’ isn’t already entirely controlled at the moment- then you think wrong.
I imagine it would be on a Chinese model that, ie nations would have their own platforms that couldn’t be influence by NGOs from other countries.
yes banning free speech and controlling information and creating truth ministries is definitely the way to go.
Oh dear.
Agreed, Ginnie.
And If you want to see a perfect example of Obama's betrayal of the working class, this speech in 2009 after the financial crisis is a good place to start:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS2vKy1DosY#t=2m10s
What part of 'illegal alien' do you not understand? What part of the supply of labor versus the demand for labor determines the wage scale do you not understand? What part of importing poverty does not reduce poverty do you not comprehend?
What was legal about Europeans coming the the Americas and wiping out the indigenous population?
White European master judeo-nazi race is "exceptional" you know. Laws do not apply to them.
This is SO stupid, since we are ALL of the same human race (homo sapiens). A skincolor is only a detail. What matters in eveyone is our brain.
Neil!
👍👍👍
Thank you!
Louder for the people in back and those who still don't get it, please.
you fool - you really think these corporations are lining up to pay people $25 an hour and shower them with great salaries and top benefits if it weren't for illegals.
He said he would work for peace and immediately threatened to invade Canada.
but one can't give up on them, imo. one needs their numbers.
I
Awesome....The road (Highway) today, to Hell, is paved by "Digital"Hell !!!!!
Susan T, I didn't believe that Caitlin was talking about herself either!
IF you were paying attention back in 95' you'll remember how much of an unrestrained criminal both Clintons were.
Very much so! He was one of the major cheerleaders of neoliberalism.
Oh, I agree. He championed "The Third Way"

Uggh, the creature that gleefully announced "Magna Carta is dead!"
It ends with Revolution--or we all end. Forever.
Yes, can't wait to meet the new boss.
If the New Boss is TRC, I’m all in.
I disagree. I am registered independent, but not all Republicans are liars just like not all Democrats are liars. Who does it help to generalize like that?
Of course Democrats (like most politicians) lie.
Unfortunately, the only thing Republicans seem to care about are tax breaks for the rich and culture wars for the poor.
3rd parties?
Humanity ends with a bang. Too many lies, misery, and injustices accumulated over centuries. Just look at that ugly genocidal illegitimate entity of shitsrael or what the US does daily over the entire globe. IMO modern human societies are for the most part structurally unstable and unsustainable.
"[H]ow the fuck does this nightmare end?"
Caitlin is/was so naive and Canadians are so objective?!?
😂🤣🤣🤣
From: https://changchokaski.substack.com/p/the-us-is-a-global-corporation-masquerading
Precisely Chang. What mystifies me is how ever did they succeed in doing the most elaborate conjuring trick of fooling the world let alone America.
Replaced with what is the real question. Anything that concentrates power or puts groups above the individual always ends in disaster.
Who knows what comes next?
I doubt very much that change (at least the REAL change that people desperately need) will come through the 'electoral process' of our so-called democracies (regardless of the parties involved).
Mamdani, Greens, Charlie Brown, football.
Politics is life? You have a gambling problem.
Absolutely. Democrats and liberals did exactly the same thing when they had power. Just now the definition of "hate speech" is just a different set of friends (who only get the benefits of law) and enemies (who only are given punishments under color of law).
This is merely a question of who has the whip hand.
That is all.
I knew this would happen. Rs are in favor of R free speech. They want to "regulate" D free speech. And both sides are against P free speech.
Caitlin, what do you think of Max Blumenthal’s investigation?
https://www.youtube.com/live/GceyZzZzYlc?si=kRv43VUWoYv0ryFR
Definitely good information to have out there. We're still far from having a clear picture of things.
Motive is being established.
Hi Dan
And IsRealHell is an open-air psychiatric ward.
Just look at this proposal for a new bill that will place all the power to revoke US citizens’ passports in the hands of the Secretary of State - democrat or republican…
https://theintercept.com/2025/09/13/marco-rubio-revoke-us-passports-terrorism/
The proposed bill should not pass because it violates the First Amendment.
Key word: should
Never Forget...I stand with Free Speech. Free Palestine. Phuck Israel. Deaf? Cancel Israel and it's Terrorist supporters. Expel Israel from the U.N..
The USA should voluntarily leave the UN and all international treaties and organizations.
That's called self delusion.
Sure. This is a common tactic of a great many people, not just fascist.
Thanks for showing what a nasty, fuckwitted piece of shit you are; it’s always nice when the trash takes itself out. Now fuck off, shit-for-brains.
