I think a great deal of it is nihilism.

There are tons of people (for whatever reasons) who are angry and directionless.

Too many for it to simply be an accident or solely personal failure of the people involved. People probably laughed at all the "depression memes" that were relatively mainstream. I look at them very differently today.

I know people who absolutely want "it all to burn", and unfortunately I can see their perspective. Why would people care about the welfare of a society that had already abandoned them?

We all have a responsibility to rise above and try to support people where we can...but I can sympathize when people don't.

Watching the world get worse and worse, yeah, sometimes the prospect of the human race getting killed off seems less bad than living through whatever is to come. If it actually happened, though, I think it'd be a case of "be careful what you wish for."

Directionless? Maybe. More likely, they've seen what to them is the antichrist (namely, Trump) and are acting according to the principles of their secular religion

Someday somebody is going to have to explain to me how Trump was worse than every other president, including George W. Bush, without repeating any of the usual debunked arguments like "He was a puppet of Putin!"

Not to say he was particularly good, since for one thing the US began arming Ukraine on his watch, and that's what ultimately caused Russia to invade as Mearsheimer et al accurately predicted. But considering that Biden didn't put a stop to that shit immediately upon taking office and kept on sending more weapons, Trump and Biden are equally shitty on that front, instead of Trump being way worse.

This may sound crazy, but I think the world represents our death wish. I was just putting together my retrospective of the first year of my Third Paradigm video blog on Socio-Spirituality and Small-Scale Sovereignty, in which I take a hard look at the reality in the world while questioning the reality of the world, with the goal of community self-governance.

On a playlist called What Is Reality? my first episode is Kali & Ultimate Reality. It looks at the underground shelters the rich are building, with gun turrets to fight off the hungry hordes, and asks why it's easier to imagine surviving armaggedon than inconveniencing a few bankers and saving us all.

There's a connection, I think, between not REALLY being serious about system change and our secret desire to end it all. Personally I don't think we can get out of life that easy. We exist for a purpose, collectively (which is maybe the only way we exist, as Caitlin has inferred) and I don't think nuclear annihilation would serve that purpose. War against Russia through Ukraine is insane, for so many reasons. But I think that climate change and nuclear bombs are maybe counterproductive, echoing the bumper sticker I saw: Giant Meteor 2020: Just Get It Over With.

Here's the retrospective: https://thirdparadigm.substack.com/p/what-and-why-and-who-am-i

Of late I'm finding that "hope" for anything decent has turned into a cruel mistress and even then survival is not guaranteed. My actual inflationary rate is around 33%, and rising; but then I'm poor whose existence has always bordered on the precarious edge--as are all poor--just waiting for collapse of industrial civilization.

Will the imbeciles decide that nuclear war is a good remedy? For a poignant reminder watch 1983's "Testament"--(spoiler alert) everybody dies at the end of nuclear war, everybody--even if not instantly vaporized in the initial blast. Too bad they don't show this film to aspiring officers before they graduate their respective military academies, they just might decide that war isn't the answer to everything. Peace, The Ol' Hippy

I served in the military for 25 years. I apologize for being a robot for 25 years.

If you want people to understand they need to experience first hand what getting burned really feels like. People today are numb to the fact of real pain and suffering. They are first person shooter games with unlimited life resets.

So we are going to go to war and the chicken hawks will kill most of us and create extreme long term suffering and slow death. Happy the chicken hawks will go with us. Actually I hope the survive in their underground tombs. You ain't safe in a NORAD Bunker. After the power goes out and the air becomes so stale you choke, it will take 30 to 50 days for it yo be down to a few.

Having gone hungry, without power or heat marching long distances, surviving in extreme cold, living in a tent. And that is 1/10th of what survivors are going to feel,

You can't cure radiation sickness. You can't just pop the eye of a potato in the ground and wake the next day with 10lbs in a bag..

This is FEAR MONGERING. Russia has made clear that they have NO INTENTION of a first strike. So if there's a nuclear war, it will be because of the USA and the Western/Globalist agenda to depopulate the world and destroy it, too. Americans aren't just "not thinking hard enough," they're not thinking AT ALL. They are STUNNED and cognitively asleep. Trying to wake them up with fear won't work.

Do we still not understand, after all this time, and all the music, books, plays, interviews, chats, etc, that LOVE IS THE ANSWER?

Full marks, Caitlin for showing that clip.

Why can't we have a country like the USA governed by the likes of John Mearsheimer with a deputy like Stephen Walt with a following of like-minded associates?. Rational thinking would prevail and decisions made based on careful consideration of all the facts and most importantly, the obvious historical failure in 75 years of US war policy, "well, we lost another one...where do we go from here".

Reminded me of the years I religiously followed all they said, amazed that people like these two existed during a time when the US was a rogue bully, pursuing hegemonic objectives for reasons I could never understand. It was beyond understanding. Even more so today

They have seen the US controlled by Israel, an apartheid country, tolerated the bombing of the USS Liberty as far back as 1967, allowed that same Israel to expand its inhumane occupation of Palestine when they could have pulled them into line, easily. But now that Israel funds half the successful candidates, dictates major Middle Eastern policy through AIPAC and allows crimes of magnitude against so many countries to occur without comment, by any measure the US is a slave to perhaps the most disliked country in the world.

It is the primary reasons for what the US has now become.

I understand those comments by Mearsheimer and Walt over the years far better now with the advantage of passing years and the fact that all these identified failed policies have now become the norm. Every year and with every new President. No change, just more of the same.

As with many Western countries in 2022, both political parties in the USA are a mirror image of the other. That allows for no change, as was not the case decades ago which clearly shows that there is one common factor at play.

The corrupt funding of candidates, resulting in no independent or rational thinking, all politicians bowing to the same shekel.

So if Rob Brown’s statement is truly “lame,” unless you're just here to troll, give us one or more examples of a militarily weak nation that can maintain its sovereignty in the face of determined U.S. and western imperial hegemony.

I think his statement is generally and obviously true. The countries I can think of that have been reasonably “successful” (at the moment) in maintaining sovereignty are in Southeast Asia. Thailand has resisted all empires. Viet Nam is the poster child of U.S. imperial resistance, but they did it by militarily defeating the U.S. Other arguably successful nations are Cuba and Venezuela, though they have been subjected to brutal economic warfare. Syria is still resisting, but would have succumbed without Russian military aid. I would add Iran, but they are an example of a heavily armed nation, albeit without nuclear weapons (so far, that we know of). It is dubious that North Korea would have survived as a nation without developing a nuclear arsenal. (Trump, at least, made an effort to change that.)

By the way, all of these nations are now building stronger alliances with either Russia, China, or both. Increasingly, plainly, the danger is that the U.S. will view nuclear war as preferable to a multi-polar world in which it is at best a co-equal player and likely a lesser light. As Caitlin frequently reminds us, the greatest threat to peace (and prosperity) on the planet is the U.S. (with its pack of servile western client states), not Russia, not Putin.

Usually when I'm off Twitter a while, eventually I see something which makes me want to return so I can respond to the people involved.

Those "Yes, WW3 will be worth it" tweets almost did the trick today.

TBH, in the past I've said things like "If you're willing to kill civilians to keep yourself alive, you shouldn't. If it actually comes down to either that or letting yourself die, you should do the latter, since at least then you'll die without innocent blood on your hands." So if I squint and tilt my head a little I can kind of see where these shitlibs are coming from with their "better to die than be whom I would consider the bad guys*" stuff...

...BUT, what I talked about (conflicts like Israel/Palestine, or US/Saudis in Yemen, or US in many countries) always meant that "You die because you adhered to international law, but at least the civilians don't die."

Whereas with our blue & yellow flag emoji'd friends there, "Doing what's right even if it means dying" means "Almost everyone dies, and survivors might envy them if they manage to survive very long at all."

Even if I actually believed that the right thing to do was always military intervention (and I don't; there's a reason why war hawks only ever make WW2 analogies instead of saying stuff like "Imagine if Caitlin had been calling the shots and we never invaded Iraq! Or Vietnam!"), surely the time to make an exception and hold off would be in a conflict that results in soldiers and civilians alike dying en masse *everywhere*.

* Isn't it adorable how all these people believe the US isn't already the villain, and would only become one if it didn't destroy the world? You've asked rhetorically whether it'll matter whose fault it was in the event of a nuclear holocaust, and I can absolutely imagine these fuckfaces listening to Max Boot on MSNBC telling them "Russia launched the first missiles, without provocation!", believing it without wondering for a second if it's actually true, and indeed rasping out "Damn you, Putin..." with their final breath.

Expand full comment

Insightful as always Caitlin. What really rises my bile is the saner rattling and bear baiting USA/U.K. and led by the nose other NATO nations continue to crank out against Russia.

The Cold War was ended by the Russians a decade before the MSM even entertained the notion!

The scenario was always that Russian tank and armoured divisions would come sweeping across the plains and anihalate all in their path and this would escalate to NATO using the American and BAOR troops to repel them. Second stage escalation being the use of underwing nuclear battlefield nukes of limited ‘dirty zones’. Third stage would be all out nuclear war with thousands upon thousands built. All good tidings for Western Defence manufacturers in the West, especially the American Defence Complex which is a major player in USA economy to a very unhealthy degree.

To achieve this, Russian forces would need huge amounts of fuel, long supply lines and the ability to rebuild all the bridges that would be blown to make the huge number of rivers giant tank/vehicle traps.

In the eighties Russia disbanded all its Engineer Regiments that would build replacement or pontoon bridges. It also disbanded the pipe laying and pump station building fuel Battalions. This is extremely significant as even if they wanted too Russian forces could simply not logistically invade! But this was an inconvenient development as the West wanted the show to go on for political and financial reasons as it still does today.

Why can’t people see that Russian military strategy is on a Defence footing. Ie it does not wish to project force onto other sovereign nations but wishes to protect its borders. Hence, if the request for the Ukraine to remain an independent sovereign state and not join NATO and to act as a neutral buffer between the two sides none of what is currently happening in the Ukraine would have happened. Russia is protecting its borders.

However,, the Americans brag that they can fight two World Wars on two fronts at the same time. Their military is on a constant attack footing, ready to go to foreign lands and invade them. It has nothing to to with Defence and they should rename the department to something more relevant like ‘Blunt military weapons and men to take ground when CIA assets hold illegal Coups in Internationally Recognised Soverign States! Fifty plus CIA led or funded Coups held since WWII. If that’s not International terrorism is I don’t know what is.

This proxy war funded and supplied by the US but without putting lives at risk is a great payday for them. It has multiple objectives, making Russia look like the villain, a distraction tool from the horrors of Covid, simple cash income but most of all it wants Russia to bleed both in terms of troops and its economy. Lessons learnt by their time in Vietnam. It also wants to stop any trade between Russia and Europe after all economic and social partners don’t tend to go to war with each other but act in a spirit of co-operation. NATO is long past it’s sell by date. Since the early 90’s the EDF (European Defence Force) could have been enacted and a substantial amount of planning an preparation went into this viable modern solution. But the political and financial animals did not want that, where is the fame and profit in peace? How does this enable American Imperialism and conquests. Russia has no need for land and no need for resources outside its boundaries. In Serbia they have untold gas/oil/mineral and rare metal deposits they haven’t even utilised yet. Bottom line, Russia has no interest or benefit from war but wishes to have secure borders. American Imperialism transcends land, assets etc and is a political ideology that the USA should govern the world. That and the fact the country is going bankrupt are powerful reasons for them to justify war (at least in their heads).

This is however a side show for them. War with China over the Chinese breakaway province of Taiwan is almost inevitable I believe. Two birds with one stone. They wouldn’t pay their huge debts back to China and the cash cow of the American Defence Complex swings into action. The U.K. is usually the poodle that trots along to allow the use of ‘International forces’ not just America playing to its own agenda. Earlier this year an Australian/American/U.K. pact was made that if one goes to war with China, all three nations will. A rather shallow attempt to afford Americas foreign policy some International credibility. I guess if you can’t see which country benefits most from war then you never will.
