Why do we (the common folk) choose the worst leaders, the worst role models (eg. celebrities, billionaires, etc.), fall for the worst narratives, trust the wrong people, respect out of fear instead of character, believe convenient lies so willingly, and give all our power to the worst people consistently?
My theory: (a) Humans are deeply flawed (b) human evolution has failed us and made us ill-prepared to handle modern challenges (c) we did this to ourselves by choosing easy paths instead of honest/truthful/arduous paths (d) we often tend to go for the easy/fun life instead of the path leading to a more fruitful, satisfied, and truly happy life. (Maybe most of us don't even know what real happiness is - hopelessly chasing after the wrong notions of happiness and constantly being disappointed by what we find)
(Forgive my overly pessimistic comment - but WE THE PEOPLE do have to take responsibility for our OWN actions and beliefs once-in-a-while).

We all know that humans are deeply flawed but.... they also can rise above the fray and be noble. Know right from wrong; good from bad; kindness from cruelty; cause and effect of actions.
What is deeply flawed is the system. The venal ruling classes. From the divine right of kings to feudalism to capitalism, and its virulent version of neo capitalism of oligarchs and a subservient ruling class. People were blinded with the myth of "... life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ". Happiness for whom and at whose expense. A so called democracy.
Which has led us to where we are today.
Indu, actually NO - "people deserve the govt. they get" is NOT the point of my comment. The point is - humans have NOT sufficiently evolved to get/deserve better govts. It sounds similar, but there is a subtle AND important difference.

So, why are the systems deeply flawed? Why don't we have better systems? Why have we not been able to put into place better systems? What I am suggesting is that - there are intrinsic flaws in human nature/psychology that seem to produce these flawed systems. Yes, what I'm suggesting seems pretty damning and nihilistic of the human race - but it is not exactly nihilistic - instead I am hopeful that in a few 100,000 years (assuming the planet and humanity survives), we may evolve into beings that are able to implement and execute better systems. What I'm also doing is placing the blame/burden on the "random system" of human evolution and the glacial pace of it. Maybe in the near future scientists/engineers/etc. may figure out a way to improve on the process of human evolution...
So for the time being, the fight goes on - the struggle of the 99% against the 1% goes on - I don't see any end-in-sight to this struggle.
