If part of Europe lived behind a so-called Iron Curtain in 1945 it was because the US put them there. Let's remember that Stalin himself, rightly concerned, like some members of NATO, over German unification, requested that the Soviet Union be admitted to NATO and that when Russia was rejected it came back with a proposal for a unified European security organization that included a unified Germany. Again Russja was rejected, which led the Soviet nations to form the Warsaw Pact.
The USSR/Warsaw countries and many of the 'Non-Aligned' countries desperately tried to maintain normal relations with NATO and 'western civilization', but were continuously assaulted and treated as existential enemies.
