Such an effort is also imperialism, because it is all about imposing >your< idea of humanitarian interests and >your< idea of self-rule. It assumes that there is some objectively superior system of social organization that simultaneously optimizes conditions for individuals and for society at large. And that you know what that organization looks like. The only system that comes close to that is life in hunter-gatherer bands and tribes, where personal property (of the material sort) is near-zero. Life in those groups (some, at least) is radically egalitarian, in the sense that no one is allowed to rise above the rest. Tolstoy understood this; aside from him, very few.
It's not okay for mature adults to promote imperialism based on humanitarian ideas, or any other ideas, no matter how benevolent the intent. It's not okay to impose your society onto another society, period. That is why every healthy society pushes back against such an attempt.
