In my discussions with Israelis, I have little doubt that they consider themselves victims. That Israelis treat Palestinians in such uncivilized ways, and believe that they are superior to them, has shocked me since I first saw it. I disagree with Jonathan on that too. And remember that Israel moved the bulk of its troops to the West Bank just before the attack and it took hours for them to get back to the area.
Israel’s own security told them that Hamas had been seen at the border for weeks, but they were told to shut up about it. Of course Israel knew. My big question is were they working with Hamas to make the event happen? Bibi had been funding Hamas for years. Yeah I’m this cynical.
Don't forget Egypt's warning a day or two before, and they would know, and of course once again that warning was dismissed. I know that Bibi enriched Hamas because he did not want a two state solution and neither did they, I wasn't really paying attention to the news to any great extent back in the 1990' but knew what was going on. I remember Yitzhak Rabin's wife blamed Netanyahu for her husband's death due his extreme rhetoric against a 2 state solution. He put on a mock funeral for Rabin and walked behind "his casket" spouting his rhetoric, which did inspire someone to kill him. When Hamas was in office by 2006 or 2007 Netanyahu cultivated them with millions and millions which came their way through Qatar since neither wanted a 2 state solution. I suppose the money no doubt was to make the Palestinians happier in their cage. I don't think he was working with Hamas, but interesting that Hamas thought they could be so blatantly open about their activities. I really don't get that especially since Israel had their detailed plans the year before. If you read Netanyahu's rhetoric after his win in 2022 it is so inflammatory when it comes to his plans for the West Bank, like listen man we're taking over, that it's hard to believe that was not his plan for Gaza as well.

Actually there's not that much, reserves of natural gas and petroleum off the coast stretching from Lebanon to Egypt is valued (generously) at $524 billion, most of which is off the Israeli coast. It's in water that's around 600 meters deep, so will be expensive to extract, too. If Israel wants the resources off Gaza they'll just slant-drill to extract it without paying, like Kuwait was doing to Iraq before the first Gulf War.
Israel doesn't need a reason to go into Gaza and slaughter civilians, they've been wanting to do it for years. any natural resources they could steal is just a side benefit.
