I’m old enough to have parents who were teenagers during WWII, in Europe. My dad was a 17-year old recruit from Fall River, Mass. My mom was a 16 year old German citizen then, who told me many stories. She was sitting in a bomb shelter with friends and neighbors when a bomb hit. After the dust cleared, and she looked around, the best friend who had been sitting directly next to her was a mangled corpse.

This is absolutely NOT true. There is a whole book--Rebecca Solnit's Paradise Built in Hell--detailing how people ACTUALLY react to disasters, and her examples are all from the US & Canada. What happens is that people come together and set up soup kitchens, work to make sure everyone is okay--meanwhile landowners sitting in safety far away fret about "looting" and eventually outsiders come in and restore the status quo. Three quarters of US citizens oppose the attacks on Iran, despite the propaganda. But we have no agency. What can we do to stop this, or the support for Israel's atrocities, or the attacks on Venezuela? If ALL of us refused to pay taxes, refused to serve in the military, if we participated in an open-ended general strike where at least half of us refused to work or buy anything, we could change policy, we could toss this government. I’m old enough to have parents who were teenagers during WWII, in Europe. My dad was a 17-year old recruit from Fall River, Mass. My mom was a 16 year old German citizen then, who told me many stories. She was sitting in a bomb shelter with friends and neighbors when a bomb hit. After the dust cleared, and she looked around, the best friend who had been sitting directly next to her was a mangled corpse.
We are victims of our own violence. We have isolated ourselves from the horror that teaches not to make war. We ally with others like us so we may continue to ransack and over consume the world’s resources.

I have got through a longish phase of anger at the perpetrators and their legion of minions, but now I just have a slow-burning disgust for them. But in my day-to-day life I try to be polite and kind to people and avoid unnecessary conflict...I have enough on my plate to deal with as it is. (No country has a population that is "all the same". There is always a variety of people.) Have you ever visited or lived on a reservation? Did you ever live in the inner city? We've had mutual aid groups and free stores there for over a century now... But you have to become a part of the people to know where to look, which might have been the problem in your case. You associated with the same group for your 20 years and you never discovered the truth of how Americans who have empathy and compassion take care of each other in the midst of the capitalist regime.

Another American friend disregarded our advice about 'tips' she left a fortune. This is absolutely NOT true. There is a whole book--Rebecca Solnit's Paradise Built in Hell--detailing how people ACTUALLY react to disasters, and her examples are all from the US & Canada. What happens is that people come together and set up soup kitchens, work to make sure everyone is okay--meanwhile landowners sitting in safety far away fret about "looting" and eventually outsiders come in and restore the status quo. Three quarters of US citizens oppose the attacks on Iran, despite the propaganda. But we have no agency. What can we do to stop this, or the support for Israel's atrocities, or the attacks on Venezuela? If ALL of us refused to pay taxes, refused to serve in the military, if we participated in an open-ended general strike where at least half of us refused to work or buy anything, we could change policy, we could toss this government. But how do we arrange for such actions when the bastards own virtually all the media, especially the "mainstream" media and including the electronic gatekeepers? One approach that will never deliver change is voting, which is why so much media attention goes into it, to keeping us focused on "sound and fury signifying nothing."
