It would be unconscionable to look away! My disgust at Biden/ US increases for their looking away from Israel’s deliberate murder of Palestinians. Looking away seems to be a U.S. policy.

I want to put the full blame where it belongs and that is on Israel, especially Netanyhu, but your right the US is more culpable then I initially thought. What has made it so bad is the neocon agenda which has become ours, and it is one of death and destruction. It motivated all our Middle Eastern wars which killed and displaced millions, and now is supporting this carnage. I am surprised that CNN, and MSNBC, not FOX, are showing pictures of the deaths and destruction which is a good thing and makes it much harder for people to look away or ignore the reality of the barbarism being inflicted. It's more godless, because they are directly targeting the civilian population, men, women, children. Yet our senile president who has always supported our many wars gives his full support to Israel. It's not his senility that makes him a monster, since he has even pushed war down the throats of his fellow democrats through out the 21st century wars, and before.

There are already more then 6 thousand Palestinian children dead, and more likely thousands more that lie buried under the rubble. Hospitals are often ill equipped to deal with their injuries and too often no family members for comfort, since they have been killed. It's difficult to listen to, but I force myself. I have no doubt, far too many people see Palestinians, Muslims, as less then and they simply don't care. Don't care that there are children being slaughtered. I've heard people express that very sentiment.

NO ONE should ever look away. In my part of the world which is small communities in southern Alabama, a lot of people just talk about Oct. 7th, 2023 and how we need to pray and support Israel. I witnessed it this evening at a Christmas party I attended with my Dad. The man in our tractor club who said the prayer mentioned Oct.7th and Israel like Israel is suffering only, no mention of the Palestinians who are the real victims and the ones being massacred every day. When will my country stop siding with Israel?! Why does Israel get a pass, but when the SMO began last year in February 2022 it was all Russia/Putin is a war criminal with no evidence to back it up, but with Gaza there is mountains of evidence of war crimes committed by Israel and these sorry leaders in the West and yes, a lot of Americans I’m sad to say, go on and on about poor Israel?! It’s disgusting and pathetic. One of my friends at the party, who is Evangelical, even said she wanted a blue and white decorated Christmas tree in honor of Israel. I just don’t understand it and I guess I never will. As for me I will continue to support the people of Gaza and all people who are oppressed just like I would if I lived during the time of the Holocaust. America has a hang up when it comes to WW2, yet our leaders won’t even admit that it was the former Soviet Union who did most of the fighting against the Nazis. 😢☮️

In the US, this may be part of the reason that some side with Israel: The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting Friday morning New York time to discuss the catastrophic situation in Gaza. This follows Wednesday’s urgent letter by Secretary-General António Guterres – one of the most powerful tools at his disposal – urging the body to help end carnage in the war-battered enclave through a lasting humanitarian ceasefire. A resolution tabled late afternoon in the chamber calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire was vetoed by the United States.

From The Atlantic

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/08/trump-defends-white-nationalist-protesters-some-very-fine-people-on-both-sides/537012/

President Trump defended the white nationalists who protested in Charlottesville on Tuesday, saying they included “some very fine people,” while expressing sympathy for their demonstration against the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It was a strikingly different message from the prepared statement he had delivered on Monday, and a reversion to his initial response over the weekend. [Find me the video of him saying "that 'white nationalists' are fine people." This is also an example of disingenuous people using language improperly. Is every white person who is a nationalist a "white nationalist" with all of the implications that the press is attaching to that combinations of words? If I support my country generally and am white, does that make me a "white nationalist" in the context implied?"

ABC News video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxHlrskaFuY

"...defending some of the people who marched with torches," says the reporter. Cut to Trump, "You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.

So, was Trump referring to people who marched with torches as the reporter says, those pictured? Or was it just people who did not want the statues down? This is why I want to see the whole video, not just what some reporter says he said and followed by video snippets. He suggests that it is possible that Washington and Jefferson statues may come down. They are both subjects of negative talk these days; their statues may indeed come down.

You may not believe this, but President Trump is occasionally portrayed as something he is not. And by many sides, as there are not just two sides.

Did non-Muslims from any of these countries get subjected to the same vetting? Or was it just Muslims? My memory was that there were certain nations involved, regardless the words.

By the way, do you have video of before and after this stretch of video that would demonstrate that Trump wasn't just reading a statement that someone wrote about him. There are many lies told about him...such as the "some nazis are fine people," and I'd like to know that when he says that "Donald Trump is calling for..." that he's not reading some false statement written by a member of an unfriendly press and this little snippet does not help that way.

Thanks and I apologize.

A BIG reason behind the bias you describe is of course racism. The Israel lobby has gone to enormous lengths over the years to portray itself as a Western country, populated by white people with modern, liberal values just like their allies. Hanukah is presented as the Jewish Christmas, often by very presentable mouthpieces like Brooke Goldstein. On the other hand, Islam, Arabs, Muslims, Palestinians have been presented as terrorists, nut jobs, haters of women and gay people, towel heads, camel fuckers, barbaric scum. They are not white. They are not like us. They are not human...or an old and obsolete type of human that needs to be removed from the gene pool. So great is this cultural pressure that it's tempting to go along with it. Until you realise that it is highly exclusive. Left to its own devices, Zionism aligns with racist, classist, imperial supremacy that suits a tiny proportion of the world's peoples. The rest of us can go to hell.

Expand full comment
Susan T's avatar

Their agenda is also very political. Our White House is stoked piled with neocons and they are pushing their agenda, now an American agenda, of world wide hegemony. It was on full display through all our middle eastern wars planned long before we even went after bin Laden in Afghanistan. They said they could pull it off and all they would need is a New Pearl Harbor, and along comes 9/11. There are people who believe it was an orchestrated event to provide the New Pearl Harbor they needed to set us on the path of all our many Middle Eastern wars. I don't know, never really got into it. Funny though how Netanyahu got his Pearl Harbor in an attack by Hamas which lends justification for what he has always wanted, that is the expulsion of the Palestinians and a one state solution called Israel.

Perhaps the best thing You could have done in the situation with the man praying at your tractor club Xmas party would have been to stand up and voice your objection.

In January 1991 I experienced a VERY traumatic personal experience on the same day the 91 desert storm war began. The following Sunday I -an anti-war activist- strayed from my atheist standing and went to a church wondering if maybe turning to “god” would help. The church pews and altar were covered with red ribbons and the preacher declared it a holy war. he mocked protesters who were demanding peace and an end to the desert storm.

That was too much for me to bear. I stood and shouted “Who would Jesus bomb?” Then I turned and walked down the center aisle leading to the exit repeatedly voicing my exclamation “Who would Jesus bomb?”

That experience confirmed my atheism.

If a god existed that church would have imploded as I walked out the door.

I call em like I see em, but am willing to be corrected in my numerous mistakes/misconceptions.

Calling me “Mikey” doesn’t exactly sound like a sincere attempt at friendship, now does it?

It would be like me calling you not-Ernest-o, not-Che.

Typing your size or supposed fighting prowess doesn’t impress me.

I attended gladiator school, with real live killers.

Those dudes don’t type/talk.

They do.

I think that I have pointed out that this shit In Palestine has got me fired up.

Worst thing that’s ever happened in my lifetime, as far as I’m concerned, and I have progeny that has become junkies.

You didn’t/don’t rattle my cage.

I just feel the overwhelming need to call out bs sometimes.

No hard feelings.

But, that’s a two way street.

I wish you well.

You guys! This was a great conversation. Thank you for having it in public. We all have a lot to learn about cohesion and community, since the Elites have instituted a savage (narcissistic) individualism that has nearly destroyed The People. Of the people, by the people for the people. Thank you for working on it so honestly and without resorting to “nice”. Gawd how I hate “nice”.

I am a very tough old bird but you make me cry. I believe in the power of prayer to change things and to change us. Those of us in the Caitlin sphere have different spiritual or religious beliefs but we share our humanity.

As for the paltry sum you mentioned it isn’t paltry if it’s all we have. Jesus praised the widow for her tiny gift and said it was greater than those that had given large gifts because she gave out of her poverty but others gave out of their abundance.

Please do not look away Caitlin and keep encouraging us not to either. Thank you for your inspiration and sharing your heart with us.

Lowell, I love this story in the bible—it was my mother’s life. Devastating poverty after marrying a drunk and having 6 alcoholic kids, but still giving what she could to those who had less! She graduated summa cum laud from HighSchool in 1929 without a means to earn money. So she scrubbed floors for neighbors and bore her embarrassment and anxiety and isolation by reading her daily devotional every night. When I was about 14, she finally owned a car and could get to bible study at the Congregation Church. One night she came home and I said how was it and she said “you know, you could spend your whole life just trying to live by the Sermon on The Mount, never mind everything else he said.” Now THAT is a Christian. I’m not anymore but I love her so much I can hardly wait til I reincarnate so I can see her again! That’s my faith.

This is what I think is the important part -- what we *do*. Some people are immobilized by horror. I think if you asked a Palestinian (and I know quite a few), "would you rather that we force ourselves to watch TV/IG all day to witness your people's suffering, or get down to the demonstration, to our city council meeting, meet with our reps, raise our voices, try to stop funding this ongoing massacre and giving cover to Israeli lies, because we are clear enough what is being done... well, I think we'd agree on the answer. Not everyone can do both.

Caitlin may not have those latter options because she's an Aussie. As an "American," I do, which means they are my obligation, which I am working to regularly fulfill.

What I will revise this to for myself is not, "I will not look away," but "I will not give up."

This is prejudice and racist. I am not slimy.

The obsession with giving people labels and assuming identities and tribes such as 'Jewish' or 'English' is itself divisive and unhelpful.

My buddhist learning is to dis-identify with my own identities that i unconsciously follow as to how i should be as eg a woman or a white person . It is certainly not helpful to extend that identity to a group of people who have lived in the same area for a certain number of years (though all thoroughly genetically mixed- in the 1st ministers case and my own) as applying to me.

All culture, traditions, judgements, tribes and identities are unhelpful social and pyschological survival constructs of the ego.

'Identity politics' chops us up into convenient little political pieces or clumps that are more easily ruthlessly & cynically managed by the ruling class hiding as ever behind the curtain. 'Divide & rule' has been tried & tested many a time and the results are visible all around us and I suggest the results are always nasty. I personally loathe 'Identity politics' for the damage it has done and continues to do to us. I recognise the individuality and inter-relatedness of all of us humans but that's about it. We should concentrate on important issues that affect us generally. All 'identities' will benefit then. To do this requires direct democracy or Parliament of the Streets where village meetings are held that are open to all to decide what's what at a local level and, if required, with 21st c. networkable technology to discuss issues of more regional, national and international importance. A more centralised administration appropriate to the task would organise the work to carry out the Peoples' will. We do not even need politicians let alone the disgusting heaps of bankster-owned garbage called political parties.

Expand full comment
Jo Waller's avatar

Right on. Divide and rule is absolutely what they're doing. I'm not sure where Matt Taibbi views on others things are going but his 'Hate Inc' was very good- the 'opposition' (whoever they chose to make it) are literally Hitler. Keeps us clicking on social media to make money for advertising.

The absurdity and danger of identity politics is further brought into sharp focus by people being able to cross physical and genetic boundaries and seemingly become what they are not. Male sex offenders are allowed to identify as women to avoid being beaten up in male prisons as well as being given access to the vulnerable in women's prisons who they can then assault.

One can also identify presumably as Jewish or anything one wished- even easier to do as there are no physical or genetic barriers.

We are all human beings. Even most of what genetically makes a human is not human, it's bacterial. A human, let alone the Earth, is a collective of species.

We don't need 'ishes' 'ists' nor 'ians', it's helpful to recognise the non-separation of everything.

We certainly don't need party politics.

I like your ideas but I also believe in identity politics. They are often necessary to ward off the righteous white boys who think that their cause is everyone’s cause. I’ve never seen any white male group take on rape or abortion as issues worth mentioning in their rush to overthrow the current bunch of white males. We need cooperation among groups, not all of us being subsumed under one banner.

As one considered a white nationalist and is a male, I, AND EVERY WHITE MALE I PERSONALLY KNOW, abhors rape. Personally, I also abhor abortion as casual birth control and all men, white or otherwise, who are enabled to screw/abandon women at will for their own selfish pleasure. I cannot speak for every white male because I do not know all of them. Many love abortion because it frees them to abuse women at will.I view these men to be as abhorrent as anybody. Identity politics is rife with abuse and denies individuality. It used to be called bigotry and it still is bihotry.

Throughout history, many oppressed groups have been motivated to resist and become independent precisely because they perceived marked differences between themselves as a group and their oppressors as a group. The Ulster Scots immigrants to colonial America were one such group. They had been economically oppressed by English landlords in Ulster, and in the Carolinas the Ulster Scots fought fiercely for American independence. The flaw in your world view is that passionately identifying with a group is a natural human trait that was undoubtedly favored by natural selection. Such identification goes back in our evolutionary lineage at least to Chimpanzees, who have territorial conflicts between bands. Group identity and group conflict are facts of life.

In the modern world, what matters is the motivation and goals of the leadership of a nation or ethnic group. Those can be easily deduced if a person avoids mainstream news propaganda and studies history. The goals of the USA and Israel are what are "unhelpful."

Expand full comment
Jo Waller's avatar

And the proud descendants of survivors of the Holocaust have made an entire industry out of this identity. What about the oppressors? Is it helpful do you think to take on board the guilt or not?

Yes outside of the group or tribe the individual will die. Trouble is we now live in cities and can survive happily on our own or more accurately with the support of neighbours who aren't the same as us. The tribal identities are deliberately formed and stirred up online.

I did not give myself the label Buddhist. I don't have to, and don't, accept anything anyone calling themselves Buddhist says or does.

Biden will go down as someone who supported all our wars and all the millions of deaths incurred. He is a bastard and always has been. If one knows about his political career it reeks of lying and opportunism. Antisemitism is always pulled out when ever Israel or the Jewish people need it to bolster their case even when they are slaughtering thousands of people based on their obvious prejudices. If these where white Christians residing in Gaza it would never be tolerated, and they would be confronted with their deplorable savagery. The reason they got Palestine as their homeland was the result of WWI where white colonial powers killed each other off in the millions and the Ottoman Empire fell as well. Oh, yeah said Balfour give the land of Palestine to the Jews after all Palestinians, well, are they white, and Christian, no, so perfect. That's what this is all about and why Israel can engage in a genocide and the US with a similar prejudicial history which it obviously continues to this day is also comfortable with genocide. Who do you think were called up in WWI in America, immigrants, most not considered white, like Italians, Poles, and of course Blacks.

Well, my mother, an anti-Zionist, predicted what you see going on now, and it would be the end of us. It was a kind of obsession of hers. I use to think she was over doing it a bit, but now not so much. The neocon agenda is helping to push all of this. Read about them since they are very much a part of the Biden administration,  and slipped on over to the old man during the Trump years. Read the Project for a New American Century and their agenda,  as well as those that signed on to it, and that will help make our policies much clearer. I know many wars preceded our 21st century wars, but right now it's really scary especially with old Joe at the helm, and the neocons who have his ear, a man who always loved and pushed our many wars.
