I signed up for Twitter when it first came out. I said, limited to 128 characters? Only if I ever have a lobotomy. I never looked at it again.

I remember when it was just pure text, one liners in its very early days. I think they expanded to 288 or something in a single tweet, brevity was supposed to be sexy or something. But when Elon came around as owner, you could then pay to make long-form tweets (still a limit but it was fairly robust to pay $8/month to not be so restricted). So I tried that for a year, and I was continually losing access to my account "for things I said," so in early 2025 I did not renew for a paid account and closed it entirely, after 11 years. I refuse to play the game X offers: pay to be censored.

Brilliant! Thanks :-)

Never felt the need to be on Twitter or X… it may have some “real journalists”, but I can get those stories elsewhere, without supporting Elon.

Ben Norton recently mentioned that X looses money (Mr Musk has 'difficulties' with advertising companies ...), besides it is sort of 'Wild West' which I don't find so bad ...

Carolyn L Zaremba's avatar

I think that's a mistake. I often hear up to date news first on X. I don't pay for X. I just go there to check out news, especially international news.

same i also never created an account on Twitter, and in hindsight I am glad I did seeing what the platform has become nowadays

Nice to see it being referred to as Twitter rather than "X".

(Also nice to see Antiwar.com at the top of the page, but I guess that goes without saying!)

Many more worthy accounts should be on such a list, depending on one's focus. On anti-Zionism, I feel @zei_squirrel and @tvfreepalestine should definitely be there.

On the other hand, that former unit 8200 Zionist infiltrator of the Palestine movement, @academic_la (aka Shaiel Ben Ephraim) should not be on anyone's trusted list.

Is there a way to do this to fakebook feeds?

We're being swamped with "we stand with satanic toddler torturers" accounts...

Patrick Powers's avatar

Facebook suddenly switched to 90% stuff I didn't want. Then they cut me off and demanded a mugshot video of myself. Someone who gave in said he still didn't get access back. Face gave the absurd excuse that I was suspected of being a robot. I shall never return.

Carolyn L Zaremba's avatar

FB is increasingly mostly ads that have nothing to do with anything I am remotely interested in. If I want to see friends' posts, I actually have to go to their pages.

If we all just would get off social media, talk to each other and pass notes written on paper, the people ruling over us would be on shaky ground

Good information, many thanks.

Handy information for those who use "social media". Its been my policy to never use social media until I joined Substack; but that is where my social media footprint ends.

Bushrod Lake's avatar

I kind of go with the people I know (if it's not an AI rendition) on a daily basis. I don't need lists.

Brilliant!!! You two are shining stars . I love your intelligence.

Elon (in the guise of Jack Dorsey and his "Blue Checks") permanently suspended my Twatter account for suggesting ivermectin have human utility for onchocersiasis (river blindness), which they assert "advocate suicide". Never mind, its developers received a Nobel Prize for precisely that. He's the epitome of "Semite", which means one boasting of his fame.

I am easily overwhelmed by clutter, especially in my mind. I don’t have an account with X or Instagram, and I have one with FB which I joined to be able to download some music. I have never created a profile.

I really appreciate Substack which exposes me to journalism and information that I previously could not access inside the imperial bubble. It appears that as the world grows more polarized and treacherous, the ability to see it more clearly has also increased.

Very useful, thanks.

I wonder if there's something similar on BlueSky.

I was removed from X the day Trump was inaugurated (probably for retweeting too many proPalestine posts) and my FB account was hacked no way for me to get back in (after I asked if anyone had heard of BRICS -- a few years ago when I first heard about it), so BlueSky is the only platform left to me.

And I still get lots of right wing crap that I immediately unfollow.

Carolyn L Zaremba's avatar

Bluesky is for liberals and I am not a liberal.

Diana van Eyk's avatar

What would you suggest instead? There are some who are left on that platform, and it's easy to unfollow those who aren't.

Indie's avatar

there's Upscrolled, they don't have lists but are highly pro-Palestinian. There's no desktop interface yet.

yes BlueSky has lists too - here's one I made over there. I am not active on BlueSky and I call it BlueCry because there are no conservatives there at all

https://bsky.app/profile/indiemediatoday.substack.com/lists/3layvjgoao42l

you can also make something called a Starter Pack

Diana van Eyk's avatar

Thanks. I'll try to figure out how to make a list on BlueSky.

The Revolution Continues's avatar

I'm started an account on BlueSky mostly because I wasn't sure where X was going when Muskrat did the name change... But I prefer Twitter. However, there are non-neoliberals on BlueSky, and I've followed a few of them who are Communist/Socialist/Anarchist/Green folks. Occasionally I come across a good news article on BlueSky that I haven't seen on Twitter or elsewhere. But my Facebook is total bonkers... I guess I've been shadowbanned so much that it won't even let my own spouse or siblings find my posts or put an "@" to get my attention. Zuckerberg sucks!

hierochloe's avatar

FB is truly bonkers, I dunno if it's more the platform or the people who still use it

The Revolution Continues's avatar

I wouldn't hear anything from some of my family members without FB... They don't seem to use anything else. SIGH.

hierochloe's avatar

same, and some of them are the bonkers on there

Diana van Eyk's avatar

I'm happy to NOT be on either X or FB, although I miss some of my FB contacts -- friends, family...

Peace be upon you by Gaza and Jerusalem - Honour and victory are the allies of the axis of resistance and its allies, and humiliation and shame are for the axis of evil, Epstein Class (USA, Britain, France, Turkey, Qatar, UAE, NATO Governments, New Nazi, Masonic, Zionist and Israel) and its allies.

The fact that you are still on X and that you think you're being targeted by 'Zionists' and that you can avoid this by following certain accounts of your supposed choosing shows how very far you are from avoiding the algorithm. You are not resisting being influenced by US based interests in oil, arms, media, pharma, animal ag, finance and tech who have persuaded everyone that Israel is controlling the poor old US of A.

When the conspiracy of 'globalist' Jews controlling, surveilling and impoverishing us first arose out of the 'covid' debacle, Caitlin agreed with me that there was no such thing. Now, she seems to have fallen for it.

Carolyn L Zaremba's avatar

You are assuming that X is the only place Caitlin goes for real news. That is a false assumption. Like me, I imagine Caitlin goes to many news sites every day. I personally go to the World Socialist Web Site first, and then peek at the Guardian to spot the lies, then I go on X, then I go on RT, and then I go to various podcasts every single day. By the way, if you think there was "no such thing" as Covid, you are delusional. I had Covid. Now I have Long Covid, and it is the worst thing you can imagine. You don't seem very bright.

Jo Waller's avatar

You had a made up collection of wide-ranging and common symptoms with no validated test and then you had them again for longer and you think I’m not very bright.

George McFetridge's avatar

Yes. It's very hard for people to admit they've been duped.

Davina's avatar

I could never understand people claiming coved was a con. I have never had it, but have family members who have and it's no fun. I get the vaccine every six or so months because anything that messes up the bronchial and I really suffer, have done since early childhood. Drumpf telling people to drink bleach was such a stupid thing for anyone to say.

It's weird hiow so- called politicians, usually in the US, will say such things, I don't recall anyone ever saying measles, mumps, or tuberculosis was a con. Sometimes, I think, it's just to get their name out there, even if it means they get laughed at.
