I don't see how anyone who thinks even a little bit can possibly believe that we live in a democracy these days. Or that there is any difference between Democrats and Republicans. Biden is a total warmonger and Trump and his buddies will follow that same path. Our world is collapsing environmentally, and if that doesn't get us, the nukes will. They have it all figured out. Guess they have already paid for their funerals and want to be sure they happen.
The United States is in no wise a "democracy", nor is it a "democratic republic" or whatever, but an oligarchy, featuring unlimited lawful bribery for those who can afford pricey lawyers.
Yeah, I've seen your kind of talk before. The last guy got blocked too. People speak straight and you try to spiral it towards whatever point you're trying to make. Smart people don't let themselves fall for it. Have fun trying to direct the conversation through old fedora hat tactics.
Our republic was organized to promote and protect democratic principles of freedom of self-determination, speech, religion, etc. Perhaps you're confusing federal government organization provided by the articles with democratic freedoms provided by the bill of rights.
Duh, America sees its various vassals, puppets, lackeys, buttbois and catamites around the world as sheep to be sheared or fleeced, as convenient at the moment.
So what now for Cuba.... Marco Rubio, it is said has a special hatred for Cuba, an irrational, delusional hatred for the country his parents fled from to escape the US puppet Batista's oppression. The fact that the son hates it more now when the puppet was overthrown and Fidel and Che with the Cuban people gave birth to the revolution, says what kind of psychopaths we are dealing with.
Cuba has survived 60 years or so of embargoes, sanctions, assassination attempts, ongoing sabotage, the full spectrum of cruelty of an empire. Viva Cuba!
Most revolutions are for immature , ignorant hot heads ? See Cuba , Russia China etc. " If you go carrying around pictures of Chin and Mao , you ain't going to make with anyone any how " - Revolution by the Beatles
Yeah, that describes the American "Revolution" perfectly. It was full of immature, ignorant hot heads. No thinking people or people with advanced learning were involved in it whatsoever. Whatever were they thinking! *satire*
Any notion that Trump was a peace-seeking commander-in-chief who spent his time in the Oval Office fighting America’s war machine is a fantasy coated in convenient omissions, blatant lies, and wishful thinking.
Caitlin, while I agree with most of the article, I take exception to the following line -
>>"A bunch of empty narrative fluff pouring a lot of emotional energy into either supporting or opposing a very ordinary evil in a very ordinary Republican president."
Trump is NOT an ordinary President (Republican or otherwise). He is "exceptional" (but not in any good ways). He is "exceptional" at theatrics, drama, moral panics, and populism. He is exceptional at DISTRACTING most with his "anitcs" while the rest of the elite establishment goes about destroying the social and economic structures of the US (and increasing inequality in the process). He is "exceptional" at conning and scamming and defrauding millions of people. The last thing I would call Trump is "an ordinary President". I do agree that his "evilness" is ordinary though (when compared with all the evilness of past Presidents).
How quickly we forget. Nixon ordered a secret bombing campaign that killed over a million people. Reagan and Bush were equally horrific, doing proxy wars and outright wars based on lies with similar body counts while dismantling the New Deal and rolling out Neoliberalism. Bush II presided over the expansion of the intelligence and security state in a way unprecedented since the establishment of the FBI and CIA.
Trump is indeed an ordinary Republican. We've had vitriolic nativist fascists in power before. Trump is just one presiding over the decline of empire, rather than our ascension. Instead of founding the CIA or integrating an army of blackshirts into the military, he's talking about a DOGE department and doomed-to-fail tariffs. Laughable.
What will change? Try using your imagination. The US is on a certain trajectory (from decades of American exceptionalism thinking that has led to erroneous world-views and foreign policy decisions). Under Trump, the US Empire will accelerate on its current path (towards attempting to maintain global hegemony and unipolarity in a world that is transitioning to multipolarity).
So, the change would be "how hard the foot is pressed down on the pedal"...
Yep, all empires have failed for pretty much the same reasons, not the least of which are hubris and magical thinking. The problem is that no great nation/empire before us (I won't exalt the former Soviet Union as an "empire" for economic reasons and because of its inability to project empire-scale power.) has had the ability to blow up the world in a fit of pique as it faces its inevitable end.
>>"has had the ability to blow up the world in a fit of pique as it faces its inevitable end."
One reason for that is that the technology and ease with which to do that was not present in the past. With the advent of nuclear technology, impossible things/outcomes have become possible.
Who's to say what would have happened if nuclear technology had been invented 2000 years ago? Would we even have been born?
Who's "none of us" ? The small community of Caitlin's substack subscribers that are in the US?
If you want to look at who is fooled, look at all the people in the US that voted for Trump. Similarly, if you want to look at all the people Harris has fooled, look at all the people that voted for Harris.
In fact, the opposite of what you say is true. Most people are fooled most of the time (i.e. empire propaganda). Maybe you and I are not "most people" ?
It would require different awareness, attitudes, and tactics - and here are some reasons why:
(1) Trump is a MASTER at distraction (through his behavior and mannerisms). He diverts much needed time/attention/focus away from other important problems that need solving. i.e. Trump causes more people to focus on HIM (and his behavior, personality, antics, etc.) than on other problems. So, people (especially Democrats) land up spending more time/energy fighting Trump instead of fighting the US Empire.
(2) Trump causes MORE domestic problems for Americans. This means that now Americans have MORE to focus on - not just international issues but domestic ones also. This diverts resources (time/money/energy/people/etc.) away from fighting the US Empire into ALSO fighting Trump on domestic policies.
(3) All the media (MSM and Independent) will spend MORE airtime on "all the drama" that Trump creates. This means that less "light" will be shed on the global consequences of US Empire (by all forms of media) than the already limited amount of coverage at present.
(4) Because MOST Americans STILL get their media from MSM sources, and since MSM sources will land up spending MORE time on Trump (instead of other issues), American people are less likely to be informed of the problems created by US Empire (from the already currently low levels).
true, but i'd divide the credit some more between him and indeed the other actors you mention (particularly msm) who will zealously jump at the chances his 'colorful' personality offers. (he didn't contribute that much to the whole russiahoax saga, imo). but i'm confident that a warned resistance will also be a more creative resistance, linking resistance to domestic problems to international issues.
>>"but i'm confident that a warned resistance will also be a more creative resistance, linking resistance to domestic problems to international issues."
(1) Unfortuntately, "human attention" is a fixed/limited resource. If this resource is diverted towards focusing on internal domestic issues, that means less of it is available to focus on external/world-wide issues.
(2) Humans are more concerned/self-interested in what happens to them than what happens to others (for the most part). Hence, Americans (in general) care MORE about what directly affects them then what happens to Russia/China/Middle-East/etc.
>>"he didn't contribute that much to the whole russiahoax saga"
Of course he did, but not in the way that people think. He (and the media) used the Russiagate hoax to divert attention from REAL PROBLEMS that Americans face. Trump (and the MSM) made it ALL ABOUT his personality. Many of the bipartisan policy decisions enacted by congress (during his 4 years in office) got scant attention from the media or the population - all the attention was on Trump and his personality and attacks against his personality (Russiagate for example). These policies (passed by the elites of both parties) dismantled many facets of democracy, control, and rights of common people (for more details, you will have to check out the official policies passed - over a 1,000 - from official congress documentation - and then parse through how it shifted the balance of power/rights/etc. even more from the people to the elites).
"In theory it was supposed to be the Peace Department, but in practice the US just got two War Departments."
Actually, the military budget is spread across many departments--the Department of Energy deals with the nuclear warheads, for example. The US cabinet is just one big War Machine. Wouldn't it be nice to have a "Secretary of Peace and Diplomacy" some day?
Dennis Kucinich when he was in Congress proposed a Department of Peace. He also introduced an impeachment bill against W on 34 occasions. Not much support in America for either of those rational and common sense initiatives. Being in Ohio, I miss my old humans..
I am reaching a point where I believe that a total collapse of the US is the only thing that might stop the spiraling down to the abyss. How much fffffing worse can this country get before it collapses under the weight of its evil? Trump might just be the agent to effect the collapse. And no he is not worse than Biden but soon to be in the catbird seat. Kind of like musical chairs only instead of a prize when you reach the winning chair you oversee the final drop into the abyss. The question is will the US take the world along for the ride?
The U.S. will not relinquish power and go the way of Great Britain, it will take everyone with us. Nonetheless, I think we have to protest, speak out, try to change the trajectory that you have talked about our being on.
While I like the sentiment I don't think they give a shit about who or how many protest. They are now in a blind panic and they are more than willing to risk the very existence of the world to remain in power. This is a truly dangerous situation, undoubtedly the most dangerous in history.
When I heard about Rubio, I immediately pictured a look of frustration on Jeffrey Sachs' face, reflecting my own deep skepticism, my own first thought being: this guy as our principal diplomat? Intelligent, well-spoken diplomacy, better than Blinken? Impossible for me to deny that, as usual, lesser-evilism mediocrity rules in America.
"Nothing Trump will do inside US borders over the next four years will be the tiniest fraction as murderous, tyrannical and worthy of ferocious opposition as what Biden is doing in Gaza right now"
Maybe it's because my family includes people who have lived for decades in the US w/o documents, but I think we are crossing into a qualitatively different political regime - outright fascism. His extreme words are not just rhetoric, they are intended to motivate and direct his armed followers. He failed on Jan 6 2020 b/c his forces were not sufficiently organized. He and his team have learned. He will recess appoint his dream cabinet, declare a national state of emergency, shed the old-school military officer corps and let his irregular forces do the dirty work. His supporters marched in Columbus Ohio this past weekend flying Nazi flags.
For the record, I voted for Stein/Ware b/c of the unspeakable actions of US/Israel in Palestine.
problem with these 'great expectations' might be that people might consider themselves 'lucky' or even 'successful counteractivists' when only half of the 'promised', expected and announced horror shit show is achieved. (like deporting 'only' 5 mil in stead of 11 mil).
It works both ways (i.e. in both directions). Here is an example:
Trump claimed to build the border wall (during his 2016 Presidency). The original claim "I will build 2,000 miles of the border wall and make Mexico pay for it."
He built a VERY small part of it. But Trump supporters claim victory by magnifying his "building the wall" results. Meanwhile, Trump opponents claim victory by saying "how they stopped him from building/progressing on the wall" while ignoring the fact that that he did build 52 miles of NEW border barriers and approx. 450 miles of repairs and secondary barriers and also set the process in motion.
Hence, both Pro-Trump and Anti-Trump supporters claim victory, while in reality BOTH the groups are LOSERS.
From what I see happening, the same logic/results are likely to follow with the "deportation" and "immigration" issue - with BOTH sides claiming victory when in reality BOTH sides will be losers.
Unfortunately, most Americans are too STUPID to realize that there are NO winners here - just different magnitudes in the amounts EACH SIDE may lose.
There is a fundamental difference between what has worked in the past (divide and conquer) and what still works today (and going forward). The new thing is called China : instead of dividing and setting countries up against each other the traditional Washington power play pushes the entire world into China's camp. Remember we were going to destroy the Russian ecomomy, right? One could argue that the old strategy has worked well and did serve the US's interest in the past but that going forward things will be done differently. If you want to compete with China for global influence what works best is to replicate China's approach. That is in the interest of the US. With the old methods, China is winning, and the West is losing. The Western elite in both the US and Europe hasn't figured that out yet. We will soon be able to see how different Trump will be, probably very different...
A brilliant analysis as usual. It’s just possibly that Trump won’t make it inauguration day. Butcher Biden has approved the use if long range missiles into a region of Russia knowing that Putin will consider that an act of war by NATO and has made it clear nuclear weapons are on the table. None of us may make it to inauguration day. Genocide, nuclear war, Biden can’t be beat for evil, even by Trump.
That would at least spare the world from hearing his inaugural address wherein he will rail against immigrants and socialists and communists and various enemies of US greatness.
NATO is with JOE on the long range missiles into Russia. What happened to K? You wouldn't even know that she is alive. What happened to JOE being unable to serve? He's on a trip to

Trump is anything but predictable, and I don’t mean that in any redeeming or exculpatory way. But it does give hope that his erratic behaviour will reduce the efficiency of his administration’s mayhem. And that, folks, is what it’s come down to! Let’s hope that the loose nuts rattling around in the Whitewash House only succeed in making noise, not more chaos.
Caitlin - the next time Kamala's Klub becomes irate with you....ask them in dulcet tones ....Please name 5 important successes Kamala has had in the 30 years of being in "public service." That made a difference for the workers...or for the children......or for the elderly......or for women or for education. Actual identifiable, significant improvements. They won't be able to. So, give them some slack. Ask them to give you three. One for each decade of her 30 year service.
I don't see how anyone who thinks even a little bit can possibly believe that we live in a democracy these days. Or that there is any difference between Democrats and Republicans. The US has been a an oligarchy for some time . This election was just another confirmation.
Then why is Trump the first billionaire to win the White House?
Perhaps you need to define oligarchy so we'll know why your claim appears to be senseless.
the oligarchs aren't in the white house. The pull the strings on the puppet show to make us look at the puppet stage called the white house.
Again, confusion ensues in the absence of your definition.
Yeah, I've seen your kind of talk before. The last guy got blocked too. People speak straight and you try to spiral it towards whatever point you're trying to make. Smart people don't let themselves fall for it. Have fun trying to direct the conversation through old fedora hat tactics.
Being blocked means not having to deal with idiocy.
The United States has never been a democracy,
True but it was organized around western democratic principles.
Democracies and republics are mutually exclusive.
Our republic was organized to promote and protect democratic principles of freedom of self-determination, speech, religion, etc. Perhaps you're confusing federal government organization provided by the articles with democratic freedoms provided by the bill of rights.
The Bill of Rights have no enforcement clauses.
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding on dinner.
Republicanism is a well-armed lamb contesting the electoral results.
YOU did not care about other countries America,!
Duh, America sees its various vassals, puppets, lackeys, buttbois and catamites around the world as sheep to be sheared or fleeced, as convenient at the moment.
What does anyone propose to do about it?
So what now for Cuba.... Marco Rubio, it is said has a special hatred for Cuba, an irrational, delusional hatred for the country his parents fled from to escape the US puppet Batista's oppression. Cuba has survived 60 years or so of embargoes, sanctions, assassination attempts, ongoing sabotage, the full spectrum of cruelty of an empire. Viva Cuba!
One day Palestine too will be free!
Viva Cuba! Viva Palestina! And maybe some day even the US will be "free" of the imperialists.

You and I have DIFFERENT definitions of "ordinary" and "Republican".
I can only imagine how you'd decorate "DIFFERENT" if rich formatting were available.
So? What now? What will change? Absolutely nothing. Better go back to the King James Bible.
What will change? Try using your imagination. The US is on a certain trajectory (from decades of American exceptionalism thinking that has led to erroneous world-views and foreign policy decisions). Exceptional, indeed :-)
Yes, exceptionally moronic, narcissistic, clueless, crude, misogynistic, bombastic, pompous, vulgar, racist, unhinged, deplorable, self-serving,......ad infinatum.

Be afraid, Lowell Googins, be very afraid.
I am not afraid. But also out of hope the US will wake up without getting crushed.
I’m sure you guys have seen the “Israeli” flag outside Rubio’s office in a video a gal did. I wonder if it’s still there?
It'll be firmly attached to the wall inside his office.
Or perhaps he sleeps with it on the pillow next to him in bed, and kisses before he closes his eyes (wife on the sofa)😂.
There is a reason he’s known as ziondon …
When I heard about Rubio, I immediately pictured a look of frustration on Jeffrey Sachs' face, reflecting my own deep skepticism, my own first thought being: this guy as our principal diplomat? Absolutely spot on. The biggest objection to Lardass is the fact that he is so crude in public. To all of the innocent dead, that means nothing.
