I don't know as I am not that knowledgable but I have read that there were pressures on Hamas. The Abraham Accords were normalising relations between the Arab world and Israel - and they needed to stop Saudi Arabia and Israel from normalising. Also Israel wasn't just sitting back it was running an apartheid system which was increasingly pressurising the palestinains - in Jerusalem, the settlers in the West Bank were slowly taking all the land and homes anyway (there was n paradise) and Gaza was an open prison. The world was ignoring the injustice and suffering - they were accepting the two state solution had failed and could never succeed - this slow strangulation without a world consciousness was dangerous for Palestinian aspirations for statehood. I also have read that Hamas was surprised by how many hostages they were able to take - they didn't know about the festival and it is said Israel deliberately left it go ahead even knowing the security risk. I'm some what confused in terms of Hamas's actions, not only now, but in the past as well, but especially now. Hamas carries out an attack which they know will bring retribution, retribution that might even provide Netanyahu justification for implementing a genocide. He was even defending himself against corruption charges this year and his time is running out for implementing a one state solution which no doubt he sees as his legacy. Their homes, lands, their livelihoods are being taken away, as well as their lives. Why didn't they think of this possibility since their plans were developing over a period of at least a year or two?

I don't know as I am not that knowledgable but I have read that there were pressures on Hamas. The Abraham Accords were normalising relations between the Arab world and Israel - and they needed to stop Saudi Arabia and Israel from normalising. Also Israel wasn't just sitting back it was running an apartheid system which was increasingly pressurising the palestinains - in Jerusalem, the settlers in the West Bank were slowly taking all the land and homes anyway (there was n paradise) and Gaza was an open prison. The world was ignoring the injustice and suffering - they were accepting the two state solution had failed and could never succeed - this slow strangulation without a world consciousness was dangerous for Palestinian aspirations for statehood. I also have read that Hamas was surprised by how many hostages they were able to take - they didn't know about the festival and it is said Israel deliberately left it go ahead even knowing the security risk. Israel also killed a lot of people that Hamas have been blamed for killing - bombing from the air. Israel have also, as caitlin says, been very successful in using propaganda to lie about how barbarous the attack was. I think the degree of barbarity of Netanyhu and his cabinet could not easily have been predicted - how could Hamas predict such a rapid speeding up of genocide (the slow one having gone on since 1948) when up until now the Israel response has been 'mowing' the lawn - a disproportionate killing but not obviously genocidal. Do you really think a post-Netanyhu world would have been any less harsh to the Palestininans. Israel is based on racism towards the Palestinians? I think Hamas primary objective was to get hostages to use in exchange for their children and families being held without charge. They knew there would be a backlash and were prepared for it. Prior to Oct 7th Israeli normalisation with Saudi was on the table, and a Palestinian state was not. Now the situation has reversed. The eyes of the world have been opened wide not only to the brutality of Israeli apartheid but to the blatant illogic and hypocrisy in Western politicians and media (though there is queasiness in even hawkish pundits when describing the massacre of children).
The axis of resistance is wisely not being drawn in but Israel knows if it attacks Lebanon they will lose Northern Israel to Hezbollah. Israel cannot win against Hamas in Gaza.
