The basis for this “threat” was a memo that was penned by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Times readers weren’t told how the reporters knew that the information they were being fed was accurate. Why it would make any sense for Iran to do something like this – given the country’s defensive posture and consistent attempts to de-escalate despite 16 months of repeated bombings – was not addressed.
The seed for this reporting was planted by Barak Ravid, the Israeli government’s primary conduit to American audiences, who first reported on the existence of this generic, detail-free memo. Ravid, who served as a signals intelligence (SIGINT) analyst in the IDF’s 8200 intelligence unit, has made a name for himself as the primary US-based propaganda arm of the Netanyahu government, by simply writing down what Tel Aviv tells him and simply adding “officials say” at the end.
The notion that Iran is going to initiate airstrikes against American forces in the region and invite another round of war that it’s spent years trying to avoid, doesn’t make sense. Axios and the New York Times understand this, but chose to act as a platform for the US government’s “intelligence” anyway.
Backing Israel in its slaughtering of the Palestinians sure sounds similar to the pursuit of Manifest Destiny as justification for the slaughtering of Native Americans, doesn’t it,?
