My three big takeaways from the debate:

In case I get super hungry, I can eat my dog.

If I get really mad at my adult children I can take them to West Virginia and abort them.

Palestinians have zero chance of survival.

Expand full comment

We need to distinguish between Arab populations and their governments, several of whom the US has over a barrel with economic aid. Jordan is a good example; half its population is Palestinian and the king has to walk a fine line between not being toppled by them and not compromising the $$ it gets from the US as it copes with serious economic problems. This is true elsewhere as well. Let's not hand the Zios any credit for an argument that's outright false: that Arabs don't support Palestinians. They absolutely do but the Middle East is a region heavily complicated by, among many other things, American extortion.

I have often made a similar sarcastic comment related to abortion. If it is ok to kill your child in the womb then why is it not ok to murder your child after birth since in both cases you are legally responsible for the health and well being of the child?

Fetus is a word Democrats introduced to make abortion more palatable to the masses. It's a baby, a 12 week old fetus is a fully formed baby just smaller. At 7 weeks the heart starts pumping blood and you can hear the heartbeat. Its a human child, do research it's all online. You can track development from conception.

women are choosing to use abortion as family planning

THAT IS A CHOICE

an egg in the Fallopian tube is alive and human

the first whole unit, one sperm inside one egg is alive and human

many units all growing from that one living unit make a human being, whole and complete and continuously without any abrupt transitions.

we Christians believe that each human life begins at conception and that God cares about what happens to every conception, He has told us that not even a single sparrow can die without God in heaven knowing and caring about it.

Expand full comment
rlostetter's avatar

Not all Christians believe that. There is a strong tradition that considers the baby “quickened” when it has taken a breath - i.e., when receiving the breath of God, the breath of life, of the Spirit. This goes clear back to Genesis when we are “enspirited or breathing flesh” (nephesh hayah).

CrumpledForeskin's avatar

If God cared about people, he wouldn’t let the innocent die in masses. There is no god and never has been. The narcissism it takes to believe god is taking care of you, but letting other people die and that he has a plan specifically for you. It’s also weird to worry about other people’s fetus’s, as much as you do. Are you scared that your underage dating pool is going ti dry up? They were voted she was after, at first, that’s why when she was first becoming the nominee she made a big point of be in more confrontational with Netanyahu, distancing herself from Biden on the issue, and meeting with uncommitted activists—basically everything she could to say “I hear you” without doing anything substantive. Then the DNC happened, and at first they were negotiating with the uncommitted activists about a Palestinian speaker—another great way to virtue signal without any change in policy, but one that would likely be more impactful and meaningful—but then they pulled back from all that and did a sharp turn and almost completely stopped trying to make any even vague appeal to those voters aside from by saying “self determination” every now and then without doing anything to actually enable that.

Based on reporting I read, they’d been seriously worried about a repeat of the 1968 protests to end the Vietnam War at the DNC in Chicago that year, and wanted to appease them to prevent that from happening, but then the numbers of protesters who showed up were less than they expected, and the DNC stopped worrying about that and pulled out of the negotiations for a Palestinian speaker. Many of us came of age during the anti-Vietnam War era. One of the most amazing things that happened was an immense flowering of independent journalism and independent thought. Advocates for peace and honest government started churning out newspapers, magazines, songs, poems, books, plays, videos. With the internet, you have so much more space for uncensored expression and influence! Make use of it! Let your gladness not your sadness light the way.

Please take heart that consciousness rising out of the muck means precisely that all is not lost or inevitably soon lost. Every single day has 16 hours with at least a couple of those free to creatively fight against evil and decline.

The very best way to fight evil IS to MAKE energetic progress doing good things and connecting socially or professionally with good people. Make this happen first in your own life and then bring others with you! If you are too sad and alone to make it happen in your own life, then find someone that you can help who is headed in the right direction. The US protests against the war in Vietnam stole defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Vietcong have since made it clear they were beaten, an admission totally unnecessary unless true.

But the nonsense of the age of Aquarius, yesterday's fake news, robbed you of wisdom and prudence.

So your stupid, meddlesome and ignorant young people undermined the US military, shamed the brave warriors and doomed generations of Vietnamese to a life under totalitarian communist dictators.

It is the same evil idiocy today - no account being taken of a pre-emptive murderous invasion by mujahideen intent on annihilation of the state of Israel and the extermination of the Jews

I look forward to the civil war that is brewing in your own back-yard being won by conservatives who demand responsibility for the gifts of legal rights and the establishment of a legal system guided at least by the Noahide laws.

Touchee! I come from a long line of conservatives and conquerors too. If only we had stayed the course to help the Vietnamese get a secure foothold on democratic nation building (especially because nation-building was so much cheaper then that it is now). Would there have been something like a Marshall plan for Vietnam? Such an outcome might have established a model the world could follow until the end of time.

I fear now we have a much larger subset of stupid, meddlesome, and ignorant citizens including equal numbers of young and old, some who can't seem to recognize and condemn state-sponsored genocide when they see it, others who've forgotten that the only good terrorist is an imprisoned terrorist, and a large number of right wing radicals who self-identity as the only true patriots yet claim they look forward to winning a second American civil war (complete with bloodbath?) because they alone understand the fiscal and moral responsibilities that accompany our blessed freedoms.

The old today may not see what the young see, that traditioned media is biased and serves its corporate owners lust for profits rather than the public's need for fair and balanced reporting with insight into issues and into the machination of government and politicians. I look forward to hearing your vision of how to secure the future for the beautiful, brilliant, good-hearted, and worthy children of America.

What worries me about Harris is that, if she wins and is the first female President, then she may feel she has to go hard and tough against Russia and China to show being a woman does not mean you can’t be tough, and she may risk nuclear war. A couple of scary points. Harris suggests Putin wants to take over Europe! Seriously? He wants to take over Italy, France, Spain, Portugal? What a stupid idea. Another point. She referred to the US military having “lethal” capabilities. And she also remarked that the sovereignty of states is a fundamental value in international politics. "Putin wants to take over Europe," definitely comes under the every-accusation-a-confession category. NATO made half of Europe a vassal after the war, and the Empire has machinated to increase that percentage ever since, especially after the fall of the USSR.

But what is interesting here is that no-one questions this assertion. I’ve heard people say it, and I knew someone who boldly claimed it (I was too intimidated to disagree), but I have yet to hear an interviewer ask, ‘so you think Mr.Putin has the intention of occupying France, Spain, Germany? Is this what you think?’

The other former Russian client states of Latvia, Estonia, Georgia Moldova, Belarus etc. as well as Finland, Poland, Germany and others are nervous. Many Eastern European countries were occupied by the USSR. All of them and all of Europe will defend their freedom. President Erdogan of Turkey has just called on Russia to return Crimea to Ukraine. It would be easier to put an end to fossil fuel wars and colonialism if we pick up the pace on deploying sustainable energy and transportation.

We'll, no-one who's allowed to speak on billionaire-owned media, at least. The worldview they present seems to be an increasingly divergent parallel reality, but I think their spell is beginning to break, especially for the younger generations.

In any case, I don't believe Russia could invade Europe, even if that were their intention, simply because of the current state of military technology. We're at a point in history similar to World War 1, post machine-gun but pre-tank and pre-air-power, where taking land by force became too costly and battles would inevitably bog down into stalemate. As we can see in Ukraine, drones and other remote sensing technology make it impossible for armies to manoeuvre without the enemy seeing them coming, and the latest missile systems are a game changer for control of the air, making the battlefield much larger, with no safe areas behind the lines.

All up, the current equation points to greater gain through negotiation than force, but the US Empire is an old dog.

How can any European country be described as "a vassal" to NATO if they, according to Trump, never even come close to paying their contribution of "2% of military expenditures" toward the combined defense of Europe/North America under NATO rules? "The Empire has machinated to increase that percentage ever since the war especially after the fall of the USSR." Who in the heck calls NATO or European Union an empire? They're a defensive alliance against Russian expansionism (Russian expansionism is how the USSR was formed after all), and Putin just proved why they need to exist.

I was just going to ignore this, but found it irked me too much to leave you thinking you'd said something clever.

The first half of your argument is specious and the second half is cart-before-horse. I must also note that adding "according to Trump" to an assertion does nothing to increase its validity.

So European states cannot spend as much on armaments as the US tells them to, what of it? How does that constitute evidence that they are not vassals? They allow the US military free reign of their territory, they are allowed no independence in their foreign policy - therefore, vassals! When they do have the temerity to display some sovereign self-interest, like Germany collaborating with Russia to build Nordstream for example, what happens then? And when the US blew up Nordstream, knocking a chunk off Germany's economy far larger than 2%, what did Germany do in response? Nothing. Vassal!

No-one "calls NATO or European Union an empire." The EU is but a part of the Empire, and NATO is the agreement by which their vassalage was instituted.

The USSR was formed out of the paranoia caused by being under constant attack by all the Western superpowers. It was a response to the expansionism of the US Empire, not the other way round. To call NATO a "defensive alliance" is ludicrous.

There is a way to make America great again and that is by cutting off lobbying money and special interest money for political campaigns. That special interest financing of political campaigns pays for VERY high dollar advertising designed to unseat our more public-spirited representatives. That's how corporate lackeys in Congress become deaf to petitions from the public and perennially overpower the will of the people.

It's hard to believe that America's conservatives can't put up a better slate of conservative candidates for national office especially after 2012. One explanation was that the higher quality candidates feel it takes way too much time and effort to raise the money needed to run a national campaign. I've also heard the conservative party is dominated by the sponsorship of the fossil fuel industry, billionaire libertarians, and NRA, all of which must be difficult to service. Another possible reason is the difficulty of being a good economic conservative and a good steward of the national interest at the same time - especially when everyone is clamoring for lower taxes and tax breaks.

I have to admit I got fooled into thinking the RFK endorsement might result in something disruptive to our fatalistic path but after watching the debate, I simply can’t vote for this babbling ego maniac. I think I’ll go fishing instead

Please consider voting for a third-party candidate before you go fishing. Show them, and your fellow anti-war citizens that we are many. A non-vote can be spun. A vote for Dr. Jill Stein, for example, is a lot more difficult for them to pretend didn’t happen. In our system, pressure from the left is nonexistent for a reason, it’s suppressed. Don’t help them by suppressing your own voice.
