Paul, I also like to write poetry and I enjoy yours because of the honest and immediate imagery. That's also what I like to do and a year ago, I submitted some of it to about a dozen poetry publications. All were rejected. Since many of them had political imagery, I thought that maybe that was the reason, so I asked if it was. The few that responded said no. But the issues involved Gaza, thus Israel, and thus Jews. So I'm not sure that they were being fully candid because when I read poetry at publishers that say political issues may be allowed (there are very few), I really didn't find anything vivid enough to really make clear political statements.
Considering all that, I'm just wondering whether these publishers simple don't like anything vivid enough, with clear images and statements. Don't get me wrong, much of what they publish is very good. But it seems the poetry hides or comes out more vague and many times not understandable.
Have you had similar experiences?
All this seems characteristic of modern poetry, and I can't help appreciating how vivid the early English poetry really is. For instance, "The Raven," or "The Charge of the Light Brigade."

I submitted a few works to publishing houses about 27 years ago, and was very selective regarding choice of submission. Feedback was quite positive, but publisher/committees are in the business of making profit. If a writer is unknown or lacking 'credential' they're passed over for those with more future potential. Publishing is business... Homer's "Iliad" is quite dead...
One-off poets - some with incredible talent, are only heard in coffee houses or perhaps read on college campuses. Poems containing political venue or current agenda are snuffed very quickly. Self-publishing is expensive, and the artist ends up with a trunk full of books they're unable to give away. Alas!
I wrote about 320 poems over the course of about four years. Many containing historical, mythical, or spiritual theme. It was a wonderful "turning of the soil" yet I have received no cigar --- thus far. The Raven is one of my favorite works. Keep writing to your inner Muse. It is a cleansing of the soul. Maybe the United States would like to explain majorly why the Iranians shouldn't return home, there were no weapons aboard either ship so they haven't got the excuse that Iranians were seeking to attack someone. Maybe the United States should explain why they didn't follow rules of the sea, and that even though they blew one of the ships out of the water, they didn't help survivor's but simply left them to die. I want to see that answered.
All that stuff about how it's my job to oppose this war, as though that might have some effect...I've opposed every war since I became aware of what my country does, since it was Vietnam--my words have no effect. Yeah, I ranted at my Congresspeople and they sent me replies full of lies about Iran being murderous and getting WMDs and all that rot, just like the lies they sent in response to my objections to the genocide in Gaza.
But I'm seeing a lot of hints that the US and Israel are, essentially, losing and will pay major consequences for this reckless behavior...and consequently I have to admit I don't actually entirely want the war to end immediately. Because this empire must be brought down for humanity to have a chance and maybe Iran is the actor that can do it. Although I'm also seeing hints that Israel may decide that now is the time it has to use one of those nukes, when it can no longer cover up how much damage Iran is doing to it. I've seen horrifying hints that not only do a lot of people in the US belong to the Christian Zionist Rapture Ready death cult, but this includes those running the military--and Israel (Judaism) and Iran (Islam) have their own versions of an End Times prophecy in which Armageddon brings on the messiah. This has got to be the most poisonous cult ever to afflict humanity, and how can we defang it before it terminates us? If Armageddon comes with no messiah, that would shut them up one hopes, except there may be none of us left alive afterward, and not too much other life on Earth either.
I don't want the war to end immediately either, for the sake of the Iranians being killed and their homes destroyed I'd love it to stop now, but unless Iran, with the assistance of Hezbollah now, really teach Israel, the USA and any country including arabs who sit with their thumbs up their backside, the biggest lesson of their lives, all innocent deaths will have been wasted.

Paul, I also like to write poetry and I enjoy yours because of the honest and immediate imagery. That's also what I like to do and a year ago, I submitted some of it to about a dozen poetry publications. All were rejected. Since many of them had political imagery, I thought that maybe that was the reason, so I asked if it was. The few that responded said no. But the issues involved Gaza, thus Israel, and thus Jews. So I'm not sure that they were being fully candid because when I read poetry at publishers that say political issues may be allowed (there are very few), I really didn't find anything vivid enough to really make clear political statements.
Considering all that, I'm just wondering whether these publishers simple don't like anything vivid enough, with clear images and statements. Don't get me wrong, much of what they publish is very good. But it seems the poetry hides or comes out more vague and many times not understandable.
Have you had similar experiences?
All this seems characteristic of modern poetry, and I can't help appreciating how vivid the early English poetry really is. For instance, "The Raven," or "The Charge of the Light Brigade."

I submitted a few works to publishing houses about 27 years ago, and was very selective regarding choice of submission. Feedback was quite positive, but publisher/committees are in the business of making profit. If a writer is unknown or lacking 'credential' they're passed over for those with more future potential. Publishing is business... Homer's "Iliad" is quite dead...
One-off poets - some with incredible talent, are only heard in coffee houses or perhaps read on college campuses. Poems containing political venue or current agenda are snuffed very quickly. Self-publishing is expensive, and the artist ends up with a trunk full of books they're unable to give away. Alas!
I wrote about 320 poems over the course of about four years. Many containing historical, mythical, or spiritual theme. It was a wonderful "turning of the soil" yet I have received no cigar --- thus far. The Raven is one of my favorite works. Keep writing to your inner Muse. It is a cleansing of the soul. Maybe the United States would like to explain majorly why the Iranians shouldn't return home, there were no weapons aboard either ship so they haven't got the excuse that Iranians were seeking to attack someone. I want to see that answered.

i've seen analysis that iran will indeed try to re-establish some kind of actual deterrence for future confrontations with the us and israel and turned down several offers of coming back to the negotiation table and ceasefires. (duh)
