These mega-corporations are all corrupt, the more powerful they are the more damage they do. Breaking these beasts alas is as difficult as Caitlin says it is. Anti-trust cases must be pursued. Taxes must be raised. Corrupt and feckless politicians must be replaced.
The system needs to change back to where it was before the capitalists used percentage wages instead of everyone getting the same amount of pay rise, and I do mean everyone. When it came to percentages the lower paid not only stayed lower they actually went further down the pay packet chain. Just think how different it would be if they still paid one and all e actly the same amount, no matter how much you were being paid.
I wish you'd all start working it out for yourselves, I'm tired of doing. When I started work everyone git the same payrise. If the lowest paid got $3.00 a week rise so did the top person. You get a bigger rise through promotion or, in some businesses by bonuses. Now the gaps just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Every word of this has been well known by Marxists, socialists, communists, anarchists, for like, over 100 years. Maybe 1% of USans understand a tiny bit of this. Probably far less than that.
but the same people who have been doing this sh*t for centuries say those things are evil, so we have to invent some new way to resist this that gently changes the mind of the corporate rascals in the next 50 years or so. 🙄
I saw today a comparison of the Trump Era as a new form of the Gilded Age, where robber barons owned governments through a system of bribes and largesse.
The wealth gap is a chasm growing deeper.
Indeed, the only time in recorded history that the wealth gap has narrowed is during v post WW2 reconstruction. It’s an anomaly in capitalism.
Boiling points and crisis come and go, & yet we can’t continue and something will give… perhaps like in Europe and South America where grassroots & progressive candidates have romped it home. Hope is stronger than fear. This is our only weapon against wealthy individuals who seek to live as Robber Barons, whilst feeding us on a diet of soap opera gristle to which we must aspire; & a daily diet of fear based news to keep us divided. And this is significant, for whilst we are divided we fight among ourselves, and lose sight of the real enemy _within_ society: the Robber Baron.
Remember, whilst we are fighting ourselves, we are not organising together to fight the enemy. And that is very deliberate.
Hope is stronger than fear. It will coalesce if only we allow it to.
And yes, agree with comment that many have understood the relationship between the wealthy few and mass poverty in terms of power. History is a wonderful thing and offers so many lessons for us to ponder and utilise.
In my state you end up paying a 30-60% "sin tax" on liquor based drinks. I'm guessing Google's "sin tax" might be a few percentage points of the profit margin for cutting down the trees.
I think if we had that low of a fee on alcohol consumption, an activity that in contrast is not illegal, politicians would probably call it an "incentive" for people to drink. What we have is not just that companies don't face illegality, but that they are incentivized to break the law and the fine is government's cut to look the other way.
Everybody needs to remember that the land of the free and the home of the suckers is the origin of the creed that praises to the heavens the rights of the INDIVIDUAL. It’s the original con.
States only do evil and individuals make things. Limited government forever, so your money goes in my pocket.
You absolutely nailed it! Our entire planet and all its inhabitants are prostrated before the most evil predatory forces imaginable. It’s time to start eliminating the billionaires one way or another and to break up the corporate monopolies. Unfortunately, spineless, greedy sycophants have enabled them to the point of possibly no return.
An alternative subterranean geothermal-powered giant server solution: copy China's example. They have built two massive research facilities - one called JUNO (studying neutrinos) is 700m underground and the other studying Dark Matter (the Jinping Underground Laboratory) is 2,400m below the Earth's surface. Both are primarily powered by SOA geothermal energy and heat exchangers(etc).
We all use the internet 24/7 so it is up to all of us Earthlings to use planet-friendly solutions wherever and whenever possible...
What a lovely action Google undertook pre-emptively! No doubt, Google weighed up the cost of delaying the removing of the trees and the likely chicken feed fine. If the decision maker in Google spent, say 5 years in a Finland gaol, would that be punishment? No. Get Google to replant double the entire area with mature age trees. That would be punishing. And add to that, no consideration of any development proposal until the trees are reestablished!

"The essence of capitalism is to turn nature into commodities and commodities into capital. The live green earth is transformed into dead gold bricks, with luxury items for the few and toxic slag heaps for the many. The glittering mansion overlooks a vast sprawl of shanty towns, wherein a desperate, demoralized humanity is kept in line with drugs, television, and armed force."

They had to do it. 250,000 trees were in their way! Data centers are the future. Right?
I watched NAZA yesterday. Sometimes it seems that we are all NAZA; collateral damage of corporate greed.

Oh.....and PAID FOR, by......AMERIKAN TAX $$$$$$$!!!!!!
(looking at the TWIT-er vid......it looks like it was WAY MORE than 400,000 trees!)
Fuck Google… it has no right to exist.

These fines are ineffective and just a cost of doing business. All the while, the world loses trees and weakens our already ailing environment.
I wish they'd jail those who commit these crimes.
And I'm so done with these stupid AI data centres.
