I question whether people really understand how cynically depraved Joe Biden is.

In addition to green lighting this massacre, and seeking billions more to fund it, and prohibiting his State Department from even mentioning any cease fire negotiations, or vetoing a UN cease fire Resolution, or hugging murderer Bibi AFTER the hospital bombing, or questioning the death counts, et al, Biden actually used the White House bully pulpit to make a speech that touted the US weapons that are slaughtering Palestinians as a US JOBS PROGRAM and explicitly tied the jobs to SWING STATES as part of his re-election campaign. I don't think even the Nazi's, with their appeals to jobs for the Volk and promotion of German industrial revitalization, did that too blatantly and cynically. Read Biden's own words, he even specifically named the fucking swing states:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2023/10/20/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-unites-states-response-to-hamass-terrorist-attacks-against-israel-and-russias-ongoing-brutal-war-against-ukraine/#:~:text=So%20let%20me%20share%20with,and%20death%20and%20more%20destruction.

Expand full comment

How can you stand to read that stuff?

Was that the same speech where he called the wars an investment that would reap major dividends and would bring prosperity to our children?

Expand full comment

Oh yes, there are people who understand that about Joe Biden and all the rest of the western scum that's currently in power. They are also people who understand and realize the whole corruption and lies behind the western "democracy", "liberty", "freedom" and all that other shit that the majority of population spits out when asked about their western "values".

They also understand how powerless they really are, since the only way the scum will get removed is when it feels it on its skin. Literally. When bombs start flying and the scum's neighborhoods get obliterated. Only then. And no amount of demonstrating can move the scum in any way, until the destruction reaches it personally.

Expand full comment

My contention about Joe Biden personally is that while he is depraved, he is--and always has been--too stupid to be cynical in his depravity.

Now the people who are behind him, with him as some bizarre figurehead, they are cynically depraved.

I think a racist worldview is at the root of Israeli politics and militarism, from day one. I’ve spoken with Israeli civilians who argued that the survival of their country is an incontrovertible imperative. That perspective implicitly means that Israel can do ANYTHING and its citizens will be on board. The common explanation for the non-politic rationale was “what happened in Germany justifies anything we do...”

I really believe that this bias informs everything we learn about how committed Jews in support of Israel rig elections in foreign countries and massively fund propaganda campaigns in the U.S. and Europe. AIPAC was behind the erasure of Jeremy Corbyn.

Today we are getting countries like Germany and England passing laws to make protests in support of the Palestinians illegal. Public employees in the U.S. are prohibited under threat of termination from supporting BDS.

And now criticism of Israel is “antisemitic, Zionism is synonymous with Judaism, and the western embrace of of genocide is not to be questioned. So now authoritarian leaders like Orban and Erdogan are seizing the moral high ground by simply stating what the world knows to be true.

Expand full comment

In France we were banned from protesting but the Hugh Court has overturned this.

Expand full comment

I’m not naive about France’s government, but I’ve long believed that the French public understand that democracy doesn’t survive in a corporate-controlled political culture. If Americans had a scintilla of French right-to-protest, right-to-assemble, right-to-defy logic, the planet would be a lot less dominated by money and propaganda.

Expand full comment

I admire the French proclivity to riot about just about anything.

Mick Jagger was in Paris when a riot ensued and it was there that he wrote “Street Fighting Man”.

“ Cause you see in London Town there’s just no place for a street fighting man…”

Expand full comment

FWIW, I agree with you--most notably, your first sentence.

Edit: About your paragraph 3, I find these laws against protest in purportedly "enlightened" countries abhorrent. (To wit, if you scan the comments to this essay and notice a "Like" or two on the few "pro-Israel" posts and wonder, "Who reading Caitlin's essays could 'Like' these posts?", it was me, for one. I am a free-speech absolutist.)

Expand full comment

I think it’s too easy to infer that a “like”represents support for the content of a post, so your free-speech idealism will probably be missed or misconstrued.

Expand full comment

Yep, but it encourages people to say what's on their mind, which I want to know. Inscrutable people concern me more.

Expand full comment

That does seem to be the prevalent Israeli attitude. As an American, my response is simple--Don't ask me to PAY for it! Cut off all American aid to Israel. Do that, and the apartheid state's days are numbered in the hundreds at most.

Before anyone says "That will never happen," until a few days ago nobody thought they would see American Jews occupying a Capitol office building and shutting down Grand Central Station while demanding a ceasefire and telling Israel "Not in our name!"

It WILL happen now. It's inevitable. I don't know exactly when, but it's a matter of years at most, not decades. Israel just destroyed itself and doesn't even know it.

Expand full comment

While I understand the reaction to the Hamas attack what I don’t understand is how entrenched those that support Israel are.

At what point will they say “enough is enough”?

When will their lust for revenge be sated.

Now, I’m not talking about those directly involved or affected by the conflict but about those armchair warriors from other countries who just can’t help but talk about justifying what Israel is doing.

When will it be enough, at what point will you admit this is going too far?

But this will likely only occur if Amerikkkans abandon the MSM and begin reading Consortium News, RT, Al Jazeera, Antiwar.com, etc.

My opinion of the Israel/Palestine has evolved. For decades I fell for propaganda published by the corporate media. It was easy and I had minimal interest in international affairs. It has only been within the past ten years or so that I took the time to read and learn and increase my understanding of the imperialistic project implemented by the US. As you write, and Tim reads so meaningfully, it's okay to admit I was wrong about this. Hi Wombat

I highly recommend a book I read as a teenager ( and I still have it) called “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”. It was the beginning of my activism for displaced peoples.

The parallels between what the Anglos did to the Native Americans and what the Zionists are doing to the Palestinians are uncanny.

The author is Dee Brown.
