"It turns out “terrorism” is just a meaningless label that means whatever the empire needs it to mean at a given time and place."

The best thing to come out of all this hypocritical, sadistic horror show is that nobody believes a single thing the empire says anymore. Their cover has been blown for good. We see the pure evil they are. Now is the time for us all to stand up like Roger Waters and shout our support of Palestine Action and the Palestinian people. Down with the evil empire!!

We see it, but how many Brits and Americans do? It still seems like a minority.

Expand full comment
Slightly Lucid's avatar

It's not a minority anymore. Remember all the hand-wringing that 'people have lost faith in the institutions!' from liberals, before during and after Covid? People can't be arsed to vote because there is no one to vote for. The only entities the US public hates more than the media is the congress.

Don't confuse what the media says about people with what people actually think. The media stokes partisanship, and then amplifies those voices, and it works to a certain extent - but most people aren't as partisan as the evening news likes to pretend.

I think the problem is brainwashing, poor education, the Democrats having sold out. If the great majority were actually awakened to what's going on, I think you'd be right.

Slightly Lucid's avatar

I think you assume a time that never way - when the Democrats were anything other than a subset of a monopoly. Neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party have ever done anything except through force. The new deal was passed out of fear of the labor movement and the idea that we'd all turn Commie if we had the chance. The Vietnam war finally ended after the military started shooting kids. Certainly, the lack of education (a purposeful policy after the government learned the danger of an educated population withe leisure time), and propaganda (enabled by Bill Clinton and his media conglomeration act) play a part; economics are a huge factor as well - people struggling to eat don't have a lot of time to fight. But, I credit people for being smarter than the media would have you think. As long as we think everyone else is stupid, we won't look up to the people keeping us in the dark and feeding us all bullshit.

Expand full comment
Duane McPherson's avatar

There is really no limit to that. A lot of people are willing to work as prison guards and plenty more are willing to do the construction work. At the end of 2022, there were about 1.2 Million people imprisoned in the US, and they are practically invisible to the public. That number could easily be scaled up to 12 Million or 30 Million or more. The Israelis (always at the cutting edge of brutality) are planning to build a single concentration camp (or maybe two) for the entire population of Palestinians in Gaza, which is upward of 2 Million people. If Israel can build a mega-prison for 1 Million or more people, the US can do the same.

Expand full comment
Uaifo Ojo's avatar

They can't do so because they need those 20. - 30 million people to be working their capitalist jobs and paying taxes for the empire

They can't allow those many people to go to "waste" eating free food in prison and not contributing to the empire war machine

They definitely cannot imprison a large number of the population as it would hurt their pockets and image. They wouldn't dare

In fact, they encourage the yelling. They finance the "No Kings" protests so we think we're doing something but then go home and do nothing.

From the very founding of this self-absorbed country, the mass murders of indigenous peoples, the religious fanaticism that has never permitted women to achieve equality, the virulent racism that has never waned, long after the official death of slavery, the masses are seeing the end of doublespeak. To be sure, empty rhetoric will never die, but there has never been a time when the vocabulary that has been the mission of propaganda to instill, has been so clearly demonstrated in deed by a state drunk on its own power.

I mean “rule of law” sounds like a comedy sketch, and have religious leaders ever been so irrelevant? This may become known as the golden age of transparency. The actions of a government that proudly promotes “rule of the fist” or “rule of the gun” or “rule of the buck,” Openly lie and brag about it, invade states that refuse to pay protection money. What could be next? The UK has already legalized euthanasia, but the religious fanatics here won’t accept that; but they’ll happily kill the misfits who just want to be left alone.

I look around and at every turn I hear Malcolm X. The chickens are coming home to roost.

I believe that Bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11, and, that he was dead long before he was ''assassinated.'' That's why Seal Team Six's (the team that supposedly 'got Bin Laden') helicopter coincidentally crashed not very long after the ''assassination.'' Dead Six members tell no tales. Iraq and Libya were on the neocons' target list, hence their leaders had to go and yes, Hussein and Qadaffi had plenty to say about everything, so they needed silencing.

From most reports, Osama Bin Laden died of kidney failure in December 2001. Why do you suppose we never saw the body? Qadaffi was killed because he tried to institute a gold backed currency, and unhitch Libya from the IMF's debt trap. NATO turned once prosperous Libya into a third world slave state. As Hillary Clinton said "We came, we saw, and he died", followed by a snarky chuckle.

While I agree on the narrative, I don't believe al Qaeda was created without any elements of the "Deep State" being involved.

This is where things become "tricky". The "Deep State" is not monolithic. Just as different segments of the Oligarchy have different goals and just as often work to destroy one another as well as ally with one another on other "campaigns", the elements of the "Deep State" may work at cross-purposes.

Think of the mafia families in all the crime movies you have seen, that perfidy is multiplied several times over by the "Deep State".

Now, realize that it was Meyer Lansky who founded Murder Incorporated and expanded it to the National Crime Syndicate. Lansky received a Medal of Freedom from Harry Truman in a White House ceremony. The "Jewish Mafia" is rarely recognized in the Hollywood movies. In real life, they are much more powerful than the Italians. Then there are, what I call, the "Boston Brahmins" (because I don't have a better label) who are under even deeper cover who I venture to guess are affiliated with the criminals who populate the City of London.

A "unified conspiracy theory" which sounds crazy, but it is just acknowledgement of a segment of society that exists and has always existed but which is rarely talked about.

Witness how Ukrainian nazis were transformed overnight into highspirited young patriots, the moment they became useful to the Empire.

Hell, Azov sponsored a white supremacist "music" festival in Kiev in September, 2021. This was covered by Vice News (aka "no friend of Russia"). But come February of the following year, we were duly assured that they had "reformed".

Yes Caitlin, the term has become meaningless when used by the U.S. Empire. As you say, anyone and any organization that is against the U.S. Empire is a terrorist organization, and any person or organization that is subservient/pliant to the U.S. Empire (regardless of how many thousands or possibly millions they have murdered) are not terrorists.

If the U.S. Empire was really honest, it would have to designate the U.S. of A. as the MOST dangerous terrorist entity on planet earth. But of course, the U.S. Empire and honesty? - they don't exist in the same universe.
