For years the US military has counted on filling the grunt ranks with young people who have few or no options for a better life, promising training and post-service benefits as extra incentives. Now the politicians and oligarchs who own them have made life so miserable for non-wealthy Americans that enough may be pressured to enlist by this extra bonus in order to fight these unnecessary, extremely expensive and polluting evil wars. Taxpayers of course will be paying for it all: ordinary taxpayers, not the wealthy.

It's eerie living in a time period where the signs of fascistic takeover of the US is everywhere - from a lawless police force called ICE, to mass surveillance and a POTUS who doesn't know when to stop with his warmongering. And I also find the legislative branches just as guilty as the Executive branch in failing in their public oath to Americans and the US Constitution. The amount of money ordinary Americans pay in taxes for the US military is unmatched in the world. Americans spend more on their military than the next nine countries combined.

Look at how much difficulty Russia had with Ukraine and they are a neighbor. One of the reasons Ukraine held out as long as they have is that the West, primarily the US, spent all kinds of money building underground bunker networks across Ukraine along the contested area with Russia. They are now being overrun by Russia.
I don't think the American leadership post Trump will be this delusional. We are talking at least another 1.5 million man military. They have to be trained in modern desert and drone warfare. It will take several years to equip and train them. The war would last between 5-10 years and cost at least 5 trillion dollars. It would be damn difficult if not impossible. Troop concentrations are major drone and missile targets. The Iranians troop and equipment concentrations will be underground in bunkers and they will be fighting on home territory for their very existence. Plus Russia and China will be resupplying them. The US will have to airlift everything and everybody in from a distance. It would completely break us and we would probably lose.

Using the $45,000 debt figure 4 years of service only amounts to $10,000 a year return. Double the debt or halve the time and it's still only $20,000. Is the idea to end up with a military force willing and eager to go kill Iranians? Willingness and eagerness is automatic when you're dumped in the middle of the desert with people shooting at you trying to kill you.

Conscription is the tried and true method for the US. Why would they want to change by dangling the carrot on the string? Are they afraid no one will show up? Given the surveillance system and knowing where everyone is every second of the day scooping them up isn't a problem. It's also a guaranteed quick efficient method rather than waiting and hoping the ranks get filled in a few years. The volunteer military was promoted as a career - a safe cushy job without war but the possibility of one. An active war is a different matter altogether. $45,000 is chicken feed to go and fight a war against people who we invaded and killed civilians for a made up reason. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction - the same reason and lie for the invasion of Iraq. The US lost that war as well.
The only credence I can give this idea is our entire government is totally fūcked up beyond belief. So there's that. What happened to the "most lethal military in the world"?
