it is indeed necessary now that born and bred americans take the lead in organising the protests. there should be dozens of 'pure' americans volunteering to take over the role of the palestinian who's about to be deported.

Today in Congress a protest is bet organized around a student leader of the Columbia University encampment who has been abducted by Empire managers and has gone missing (even his lawyer can’t find him). He was picked up without warrant or cause and is a Green Card holder with Permanent Resident status while they attempt to deport him, again without cause or due process. We are CodePink and we will always support our brothers and sisters that are being outlawed by the Empire.

What Israel and Ukraine do exposes so much about the west. And all of it is ugly.

Expand full comment
Susan T's avatar

What Ukraine does is not quite the same as what Israel does though. Israeli people have been brainwashed their entire lives to think Zionism is a good thing and will save them. The Ukrainian people have not been brainwashed in that same way. They have been mostly forced into a war that they don't really want, I don't think. In Ukraine it is the US and Ukrainian leaders that are the poison. In Israel, sadly, it is the entire country save for some refusniks and a very few others who protest what their government is doing. There are Jews around the world who protest what the State of Israel does, but not so many in Israel itself.

Communism is not anything to hate. When I visited Cuba, the main issue was the poverty which has been imposed by US sanctions. I was also brainwashed as a child to think that communism was evil and bad. Too bad we weren't taught that capitalism or any state loses when it is not for the people it is trying to govern. We need to figure out a way that the people can govern themselves and voting just does not get us there. Communism doesn't either; I think the main reason we were supposed to hate it is because it was competing with capitalism, or so many thought.

Expand full comment
Vin LoPresti's avatar

You're probably right; the Capitalists were terrified of any competition that would threaten the status quo, i.e., the class structure supporting their status. Ah yes, the eternal problem of self-government without (or with minimal) corruption. If political "science" is actually a useful discipline, where are the solutions?

Susan T, Did you see this on Jacobin?

Cuba sends doctors, the US sends sanctions.

Marco Rubio declares, ".... restrictions on visas for both government officials in Cuba and any others worldwide who are “complicit” with the island nation’s overseas medical-assistance programs. A US State Department statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.”

This action, the seventh measure targeting Cuba in one month, has international consequences; for decades tens of thousands of Cuban medical professionals have been posted in around sixty countries, far more than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) workforce, mostly working in under- or unserved populations in the Global South. By threatening to withhold visas from foreign officials, the US government means to sabotage these Cuban medical missions overseas. If it works, millions will suffer".
