As a 68 yr old Palestinian American I have spent decades giving a pass to people in my life who don’t get it because of the invasive Zionist propaganda. But at this point, anyone who does not feel the horror that passes for life in Gaza is willfully ignorant and as culpable as any of us for allowing it to continue without screaming at the top of our lungs.

I've always been dumbfounded to observe this submission from Muslims and other ethnicities whose brothers and sisters are dumped on elsewhere. Just taking it from the system.

No, you can't really change it but don't act like you're fine with it. Challenge the brainwashed, raise your children aware of what's going on, etc. That's the least you can do for those who bear the brunt of the abuse perpetrated by the society you happen to be a part of.

That's for those who indeed are not fine with it. Since too many in fact are.

Of two sets of practices, if they were similar in actions and results, one would expect them to be similarly justified or rationalized. And since the justifications and rationalizations are produced voluntarily, one has to assume that the people who hold them approve of the things justified and rationalized.

In short, if some people kill or torture other people, or support those who do, that's what they_like doing_, even if some aspects of the practices make them uncomfortable. It is probably best to stay away from such people if possible.

I protested outside a war industry conference yesterday and I presented passersby with a photo of a desperately injured baby in Gaza and one guy smiled as he walked by. I said “Is it funny?” And he said, “Yes, it’s funny.” He looked like a regular middle-class guy. I’m middle-class but a big wall came down between us. Some people, even when forced to look at a little bit of evidence, are simply too far gone. Though I’d rather be in denial, I want to understand it in case people like that are reachable,as I believe they must be.

The reason violence will never disappear is the need for it to straighten up people like that guy. The only way he will "understand" violence against others is to experience it himself. I quote "understand" because it's not necessarily an understanding on his part - but at the very least a recognition.

That's the only way. For such is human nature. Once you understand it, or choose to accept what's been said about it for ages, then everything falls into place and you are no longer paralyzed by desolation. Rather you act because you know you must, else you'll be acted upon.

Once you have decided some other people are not human like you you can do anything you like to them . This is by no means unusual in human history . Slavery was very recent in the history of Britain + Empire , France + Empire , Spain + Empire etc . I mention these more modern examples because many still believe in "progress" and are unaware of the more limited forms of slavery actually current in the Ancient World .

Palestinians lived in a sustainable way on their land, but the attitude that land must be used is very settler-colonialist. I grew up with parents who griped about Maori not using their land here in NZ. One day a friend said to me "Why should they have to use the land?" and I had no answer. Why should any people have to use their land?

In reality the an-Naqab desert, which Israelis call the Negev, was more productive under Palestinian management than it is now.

Nothing will bring those dead children back; and even disassembling Netanyahu -- cell by filthy cell -- won't eliminate the vicious ugliness of Zionism. But there are some knowings that keep me sane these days:

There’s a soil fungus in Oregon that’s between two and eight thousand years old and occupies ten square kilometers of forest.

There are ice-cave and deep-ocean vent bacteria that live down there in the dark in seeming perpetuity metabolizing strangeness.

Deinococcus radiodurans a polyextremophile bacterium that is extremely radiation resistant, as well as tolerant to cold, dehydration and acid.

I feel better that something will survive the ludicrous otherworldly madness that Zionists and other hopelessly sociopathic humans continually perpetrate upon this world.

Not that I know of. It's genus Armillaria, generally a decomposer/recycler. And as usual with human-fugal relationships, some studies suggest that its fruiting bodies (mushrooms) are toxic while others show them as having antioxidant and antimicrobial effects against some nasty human pathogens like Candida fungus and Pseudomonas bacteria.

Which all emphasizes the wisdom of the native people in the Americas and elsewhere -- live in harmony with the rest of the biosphere. accept its gifts with gratitude and reciprocity. To say the least, these are not the values of corporate capitalism, and I might argue that the type of brutality we face today in Palestine, Syria, and other areas of human affairs is a manifestation of our disjunction from our fellow travelers in the biosphere. How can we truly respect each other while disrespecting what that magnificent intelligent complex system offers us, has been offering us for our two million years here.

Expand full comment
Vin LoPresti's avatar

It certainly is sad, Peter, but I take issue with calling fungi "primitive". The complexity of both their metabolisms and their symbioses is pretty astounding. By one estimate, around 90% of terrestrial plants require their mutualistic soil fungi (mycorrhizal) as root partners to survive and thrive, the fungi exchanging concentrated micronutrients like zinc and magnesium for sugars from the plant roots. Merlin Sheldrake's "Entangled Life" might alter your view of them. A superb book. I'd loan you mine if I could.

Most of the plastic-eating organisms I know about live in the water. However, they and their progeny are evolving. There are also microorganisms which eat petroleum, which may have interesting results.

The Japanese have made more progress in these areas of tweaking the genetics of bacteria that are already equipped with the basic biochemistry (enzymes); inserting one more gene, maybe up-regulating another. My understanding is that they're getting closer to a realistic plastic-degradation process; the question is both tweaking the products of the process so that they're easily re-synthesizable , and then also scaling-up; you know, cost-effectiveness; Capitalism. Wish I had references, but as I indirectly told blackbird below, I've not been very organized about my references in my declining years.

For a general look at the potential of fungi in medicine and all over the map, I recommend the book I referred to above, Merlin Sheldrake's "Entangled Life". Then there are the hard core reviews like this one: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10451904/ from Library of Congress; very heavy, but the 3rd section reminds us that Penicillins and cephalosporines were the first and second classes of fungal-derrived antibiotics that were discovered, and talks in the heavy language of biochem about other promising fungal metabolites. Sorry, offhand I have nothing in between at the moment; I'm usually studying the details to figure out ways to bring them down to the layman's level without watering them down. Then I'll post something on Substack. Bottom line is this: Fungi do such a diversity of things in the biosphere that they are metabolically hugely diverse. A filamentous fungus that fruits mushrooms on the forest floor, and a soil fungus symbiotic & living inside the roots of a tree -- or the fungal cells harboring the cells of an algae that together form lichens: Man, those 3 fungi are not much alike. So their metabolisms generate all sorts of different molecular substances. Now think --- there are so many roles for fungi worldwide, and so many different species that live with or have to compete with bacteria that the hope/expectation arises of finding more anti-bacterial molecules (antibiotics) being made by at least some fungal species.

Please recognize the fact that all American politicians are lying to the American people about the motivation of the Israelis.

Democrats, Republicans, Joe Biden, Donald Trump the US Ziomedia falsely claim that Israelis simply want to peacefully coexist with Palestinians - which is one of the biggest, deadliest and most violent lies ever told in human history.

Democrats and Republicans like Donald Trump and Joe Biden know the truth of the matter, which is Israelis fervently believe that Gaza and the West Bank and all Palestinian land belong to Israel and Palestinians are simply trouble making squatters living on borrowed time on Jewish land.

Israelis believe they have a religious right to mass murder Muslims and Arabs on what they believe to be Jewish land. That's what their concept and state goal of GREATER ISRAEL is all about.

These crazy motherfuckers believe that the Palestinian territories, parts of Jordan, parts of Syria, parts of Iraq, parts of Iran, parts of Saudi Arabia ALL belong to Israel and the Arabs and Muslims living on their Jewish land are simply trouble making squatters to be exterminated and expelled as quickly as possible using American weapons and US support from the rear.

That's the honest to God, butt-naked truth the goddamn US media won't even mention or breathe a word about, because Democrats and Republicans know damn well the American people will not support state-sponsored mass murder and land theft, so Democrat and Republican leaders lie about the motivation of the Israelis and their true intentions to continue their war on Muslims and Arabs.

UN Resolution 181 did not establish Israel. The Security Council can make such a partition but only if all parties agree. The Arab League made it very clear that they did not agree. the Security Council had not reached a decision, but was signalling that a partition was unlikely, when Israel illegally and illegitimately declared itself.

Caitlin this is the best piece you've written so far, and I can't express enough how on time and on point you are with your assertion that people who do not see the images of what US politicians and Israeli bastards are doing to men women and children SHOULD NOT ISSUE OPINIONS UNTIL THEY SEE THE IMAGES AND VIDEOS.

This comes under the category of you got to see it to believe it. You're really hitting on something here because you're highlighting how censorship is such a manipulative destructive tool in the hands of the perpetrators.

It's worth mentioning that a majority of Israelis in Israel have not seen these images and they only know what their government and their media is telling them. These images and videos are not allowed in Israeli society. This is why some Israelis act like Palestinians simply stumped their toe.

Your call for no censorship is exactly what is needed in America, especially when it comes to semi-automatic weapons and the real damage they really do to human beings, little boys and girls.

When Sandy Hook happened the parents should have published the images themselves.

The parents should have got the images and published the images themselves to make the point that we need to outlaw semi-automatic handguns and rifles.

Just like you say in this instance: a person doesn't know what they're talking about if they haven't seen the pictures of what semi-automatic weapons do to men, women and school children - just like the bombs that are dropped on Palestinians - a person has no idea what is really happening until you see it with your own eyes.

The lesson to be learned here is that state-sponsored censorship is a tool of state-sponsored violence.

I am going to produce a Michael Moore style documentary that features the videos and images that I have and I want to put my message with it and I want people to look see, feel and think about it.

Voters need to know that your favorite politician is lying to you when they claim that Israelis simply want to peacefully co-exist with Palestinians, but the bad Palestinians won't allow the good palestinians to live under Occupation forever. There's no such thing as "Bad Palestinians" or "Good Palestinians." There are only Palestinians who seek freedom from another 75 years of US-backed Israeli Occupation, mass murder, mass imprisonment.

Your favorite politician knows damn good and well that Israelis believe Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, parts of Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia all belong to Israel - and that Muslims and Arabs are simply troublemaking squatters living on jewish land waiting to be exterminated and expelled by Israel using American bombs and weapons.

That is THE TRUTH OF "GREATER ISRAEL" and the true motivation and beliefs of the Israeli government AND a majority of Israelis.

Our US Ziomedia is guilty of whitewashing and normalizing US-backed terror and mass murder around the world.

The US Ziomedia presents it as an antiseptic necessity.

You're right Caitlin, no one and I do mean no one has any fucking business discussing the merits of US backed terror without seeing what American weapons in the hands of Israelis are doing to the victims of US backed terror.
