I am old and probably not going to be on this earth a lot longer. I am grateful for every bird and animal that I encounter, every plant that I see push up through the earth. But I worry about what kind of world my children and grandchildren and all of their friends have in front of them. I can still appreciate what is right in front of me, but I feel incredibly sad that the world is looking so bad. I know we have always been fed a pack of lies. I have known that for a while. But all those lies, all that consumption, all that take take take is coming to a head. And the ones who have caused it.....will they suffer or will only the people they have used be the ones to suffer?

I live in a country that should have been a serious and valuable contributor to the geography in which it is located, providing friendship, knowledge, education, valuable exports and assistance and all the other desirable contributions that people like you would admire, small examples of which we have seen and enjoyed over time.

This is really important. Just be. Look around and there's an entire world in the small spaces around you. You don't need certificates or trophies or awards. You don't need to be famous. The world is full of anonymous people who do not stand out in any way to the rest of the world. But they were here on planet Earth and made their mark just by existing. You are a miracle. Every person is a miracle. Take it all in.
Caitlin, it's as though this article of yours is speaking directly to me (and many of the things that sometimes swirl around in my head and heart) - it needs to be slowly digested and given deep reflection. I fully concur with Caitlin. But she neglects to mention that her prescription for true life was one of the central pillars of the 60s counterculture. The rejection of the "rat race," social climbing, "plastic" society, the cult of "success." And, since such values run counter to a political economy based on consumerism, the entire movement needed to be crushed. As it was.
This is true. And beautiful. That being said, we do have to worry about consuming; consuming enough calories to stay alive. We have to worry about keeping a roof over our heads. About being able to obtain health care when we're ill. And, at least here in the States, this is becoming crisis level for so many people. Our downtown areas are nothing but homeless people with signs sitting by the road all day. I doubt they're thinking how wonderful and endlessly beautiful their lives are, unless they've got way better dope than most of us do.
