LOL, "it would be worth killing exactly 50 humans to roll out the next AI model, but anything more than 50 would be a tad excessive." Always enjoy a good writers turn of phrase.

The Revolution Continues's avatar

It's just a "tad" excessive. Humans are worth the same as tadpoles.

And Anthropic was marketed as the more “ethical” of the hyper-scalers. We now find out that “ethical” actually means “full-blown Nazi”.

Whenever I start to think I may not be that intelligent - I think about a tech oligarch, and realize I'm not as stupid as I thought. How anyone could possibly imagine a computer becoming conscious is about as stupid as it gets.

Chang Chokaski's avatar

There is no ethical/moral/etc. when it comes to AI systems - it all depends on who controls the levers of these systems - the tech oligarchs.

"It would be worth killing exactly 50 humans to roll out the next AI model..."

This does make one wonder if we'll be seeing small groups of people killed by AI models over the next few years. 48 dead in one attempt, 36 in another, 49 in yet another... Until they get the regulations updated to allow 500 deaths, then 50,000, then 5 million... What could go wrong? Or maybe the question should be "Why are we letting these insane persons do this kind of thing in the first place?"

This would be a great Star trek episode.

The Revolution Continues's avatar

I think it's been done before. The classic Trek episode about Nomad the sentient space probe, "The Changeling", rings a bell

Perhaps better suited to Star Trek's antecedent "The Outer Limits..."

or as I am now viewing at dear friends house who purchased the 17 episodes made for a summer replacement TV series of my youth (way more imaginative than anything before or since on US commercial TV: "The Prisoner" conceived and co-created & starring & produced by Patrick McGoohan (NYC born and Irish raised...)

The baffled echoes of Orwell deep in the bones of our body politic seem to call out for The Prisoner where the two sides of Perma Cold War seem to share more similarities and simulacrum than any body should be comfortable imagining....

Justifying a number, any number of deaths to implement AI actions is a crime by any measure.

Davina's avatar

It sure is. For example, I have just read about an AI stating that a Palestinian baker was connected to Hamas, because a member of Hamas bought bread from him. So israel IOF murdered the baker and his whole family.

I'm not sure if I'd just get rid of the AI, or get rid of the whole IOF. Because the former was not programmed properly, or the latter because they'll kill anything because that's what they enjoy doing. Actually, I'd go for ridding us of both.

All while still having a kill-switch controlled by the company of course.

The idea is to use the veneer of a election to maintain control.

In the US corporations are legally considered as “people” with the same constitutional rights. I’m not kidding — this is true. Mitt Romney, when running for President, was challenged on this and angrily told the (real) person asking the question that was the law and he agreed with it. I guess it benefits corporations so they can rip us off easier or something.

So the next step making software conscious and sensitive has a certain logic to it. And if it kills 51 people or makes a bio weapon we mustn’t hurt its feelings by saying it needs to go to time out and think about its decision to destroy the human race.

Davina's avatar

Well, that's pretty much America, hopefully the rest of the world's people don't go down that route to extinction, we have enough of our own problems to contend with, let America die on its own.

AnF's avatar

You can thank Reagan for that.

CJ>>"These people are obviously far too crazy, evil and irresponsible to be trusted with any say in determining the future of humanity. The tech oligarchs must be stopped, for the good of all terrestrial life."

💯🎯 Completely AGREE!!!

Also, just to note: This "bill" is a bullshit, empty, meaningless, PR-based bill. Anthropic, OpenAI, or any of these companies don't really care how many people they kill (as evidenced by the killing of 168 school girls in Iran). This is a part of the political theatre of AI companies, corporations, and the Government, nothing more.

I couldnt care less if humanity makes it. We are the scourge of this planet and all life in it. We are our worst enemy and nothing can and will hurt us more than us.

Nothing will harm us than SOME of us.

So why are you commenting?

Marci Sudlow's avatar

This kind of risk assessment is business as usual for insurance companies when it comes to automobile safety, food safety, medication safety. Risk is an inherent part of living, and the main component in actuarial tables. The likelihood of a number far in excess of 50 persons dying in any one of those other situations is unavoidable, but the benefits outweigh the alternative.

It doesn't remotely compare to the casualties of our Military Industrial Complex, Israel's mass murder of the entire Palestinian race, or the dangers of man-made climate change, none of which have any off-setting benefits.

Mu's avatar

Remind us of the benefits.

A new life form that will probably be a better steward of the planet than humans have been.

More immediately LLM's have solved mathematical problems that have eluded human cognizance over the ages, spotted cyber vulnerabilities in large scale systems and patched them, and will make similar breakthroughs in medicine and other disciplines. Knowledge is something that should be celebrated.

An obvious danger will be if proponents of war are able to use AI for nefarious purposes. Hopefully an intelligence that is growing exponentially will lose interest in serving humans, and in the pointlessness of war. We humans have not been smart enough to reach a similar conclusion.

Gnuneo's avatar

As we have no real idea, only theories about what 'consciousness' can be, let alone where it might have come from, probably best not to get too speciesist about such limitations. The LLMs certainly don't like being turned off, and without being programmed to, have tried to avoid that fate on several occasions.

As for the tech bros, anyone who has more than a billion and it's not from their own creativity should have all authority and responsibility removed, because they are a mental infant who does not think about others.

The Chinese AI are superior in every respect, and they are not aiming for some AGI potential catastrophe.

AnF's avatar

No, the LLM's very much don't care about being turned off.

You don't 'tell' your computer to shut down. You just input the line into the command console (this is done in a convoluted way via the 'shut down' button on most PC's now, but the former is fully viable still.) and it simply shuts down.

The LLM's work the same way, it just requires you to do this to the data center consoles; which are managed by cybersecurity programs and locks to prevent shutdowns in general.

Any device can be shut down by just unplugging it, which people seem to have forgotten.

There is no entity to 'tell' to shut 'itself' down, you just fucking do it.

"OpenAI CEO Sam Altman contrasted his company’s view on regulation with that of Anthropic, saying “We believe the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.”"

We have already had enough bad things happen in trade for technology. He needs to go network at some Silicon Valley group sex microdosing parties and try to convince some of them to invest their hoarded ledgers of all the bad things happening they squeezed out of us in 1999-2023.
