I used to say, "At least the Russians know Pravda (which means "truth" in Russian) is bullshit, so they either seek out the samizdat, or they use what they know to read between the lines of Pravda to guess what's really happening."

Russian people have always been aware of government propaganda, but they have a fatalistic attitude toward it. That's pretty much how I feel now about all the US government bullshit, and I think the general population is headed toward adopting the same attitude. When lies become too great to swallow, it is inevitable.
