The funny thing is that when I lived in Ukraine (2004-2012), nationalists were seen as freaks and losers.
What happened was that it was made clear to Ukrainians that hating their brothers (pretty much every Ukrainian has family in Russia) and their own parents was the price of admission to The Club, The Golden Billion, The Magical Land Where Institutions Basically Work.
I saw the same change in Ukrainian people who were pathologically livid about anything Russian. They were scary.
