Yes. And even before that, there was the Balfour declaration in 1917 whereby Britain gave Palestine to the Jews because Britain wanted the Jews to be gone too. Until the holocaust, it was difficult to get Jews to go to Palestine because they didn't want to leave what was familiar to them. Most European Jews did not care about Zionism. Or support it. Arab Jews were also forced to support Zionism. In Morocco and Iraq and perhaps in other countries, Zionists blew up synagogues so that Jewish people would be afraid to stay there and would go to Israel.

I wasn’t aware Britain owned Palestine in the first place, but, that never stopped them before, so, I guess at least that was in character for them.
