FWIW, I have been under the furniture at cocktail parties (Georgetown cocktail parties, no less!) attended by staffers of a well-known Team D senator, a senator from a fire engine red state, a senator known for wokeness, such as it was expressed at that time. That senator is dead now, for the record.
Behind closed doors, the racial attitudes those staffers expressed would have shocked a Grand Lizard of the KKK. They certainly shocked me, and I never heard human rednecks talk in such a way. And I grew up in a barn.
This jives with my experience.
