In fact, Israeli right wing 'leaders' have been calli]ng for the elimination of the Palestinian people for years and saying this publicly. They have called the peoples vermin and all the children snakes to be killed, even blaming them as active participants in the uprising. They have been allowing and even sanctioning the destruction by rabid right wing settlers of centuries ole olive orchads, homes, and the regular killing of people, many of them children with the IDF standing by to support/protect these vile acts. By international definition genocide includes the destruction and prevention all the social institutions including businesses, food production, homes, schools, political institutions, etc. In other words everything Israel has been doing to a society from functioning. This also includes the destrution of a people's history such as the bombing of a University that housed much of the history of the Palestinins. The forced relocations of the Palestinians has been a major mark of this genocidal massacre as we have watched in gruesome detail the forced movement of people from the North forcing them by bombing and destruction of the entire territory section by section. This is forced movement of a people. This piece of Caitlin's today is just too narrow a focus on this issue.
Of course she is correct that the US comment was only about saying the nasty out loud but that has been happening for years.
Give the horrors of the Holocaust and how it has been weaponized to keep States and people from criticizing that country it has been a slow and difficult journey to get to the point of calling Israel out as behaving the same or even worse than the German Nazis. However, I am seeing more and more writers and activists referring to Israel that way. The first time I said this to a small group of older Jewish men I knew I was setting myself up for real anger and hate from them. Just using the word sent shivers through them which I understood but was so pissed off at how they claimed to be humanists but kept apologizing for Israel which was really just an excuse for its rotten genocidal behavior.
People need to look hard at their emotional baggage on such issues and separate them from what we are seeing. Even in the US it is so hard to refer to the power elites as supporting of totalitarianism and Nazi policies and practices.
