That seems to be the bottom-line And if it is, then it explains the other notorious and inhuman things they do. It's as if their well can never be filled, they have more money than they could ever spend, yet the control and power it gives them is addictive, they crave more and more. King Midas turned everything to gold. He died a lonely man.

King Midas learned that he couldn’t eat or drink gold. So, his lonely death came quickly.

Those who seek unlimited wealth for themselves at the expense of others are insane. Yet, many members of society are taught to worship them.

Yes, King Midas is an allegory and of course his demise was quick. The point is that being wealthy, even ridiculously wealthy, will not bring happiness, in fact it definitely might lead to insanity if no more than excessive paranoia.
