Elections: public theatre to provide the masses with the illusion that they have choice and agency in their societies so as to legitimize the status quo power and wealth structures. Less expensive and more effective than blatant violence/force to keep the hoi polloi compliant, but also to keep them complicit in the entire fraud and less likely to rebel.
