Liberals (in the American, not Australian, sense) taunting those who refused to vote Democratic on the grounds of the Gaza onslaught really have no concept of the word “choice”. Expecting anyone who empathized with the Palestinians to make a choice between bombardment and forced displacement is akin to making a r*pe victim choose whether they want to be violated with or without lube.
There was always another option. That is, a Democratic Party that campaigned on preserving Palestinian sovereignty, on standing up to Israel and working out a peace deal that involved protecting both peoples’ right to exist (notwithstanding the injustice of 1948 and ongoing illegal settler activity), with Israel told that failure to agree to such a deal would result in the abrupt cutoff of military aid. But no, that wasn’t possible because AIPAC hedged their bets to ensure the American people had a Clayton’s choice. It is this perverse system that needs to be torn down.
So stop gaslighting those who made the only moral choices they had, be it Jill Stein or the couch at home.
