The American public HAS been suffering deprivation for decades. They live shorter, more brutal lives than any European. They have the #1 infant and mortality rates in all developed nations, the largest prison population, the largest homeless population, the sickest population, the saddest population, the lowest minimum wage in all developed nations, and the most bloated military in the galaxy.
They will not notice how bad things get if they cannot see it now.
I was raised in Europe and have lived in the US for about 42 years (with a three year break in Belize).
I know all this. But there is a breaking point. The French were eating grass, the peasantry paid for everything, everything was taxed: water sources, trees and forests, hunting, roads, alleys, fishing, etc., and their labour was forced on free days to build public roads; unmarried women with children were almost without exception forced into part time prostitution to survive, royals had the right to first sex with all women on their marriage - until the revolution and head rolling. There is always a breaking point.
