Sanctions hurt the people and often strengthen the governing elites. US sanctions against Japan led to Pearl Harbor; US sanctions on Venezuela have led to millions fleeing as the economy of ordinary people (not the oligarchs who control 70% of the economy) suffers; sanctions against Russia drove them into the arms of the Chinese; sanctions against Cuba (where I am traveling next week) for 60 years have impoverished the people and left the government intact. Sanctions lead to lost jobs, lost income, and a way for the governing class to blame outsiders and bolster their support. " a review of all U.S. sanctions since 1970 shows that targeted countries altered their behavior in a way that the U.S. hoped they would just 13 percent of the time"...87% failure while 100 of the time inflicting harm on the people: "Financial sanctions are designed to inflict pain on the people of a targeted country, with the hope that they will get fed up and advocate for political change." Sanctions are like brakes, designed to bring to a halt....but if your brakes only worked 13% of the time, you would replace them. And so I advocate for regime change....no that's musical chairs. I advocates for system replacement: replace plutocracy with democracy, hierarchy with equality, obedience with freedom.
