I have no desire to read it myself, Roslyn, but my friend/former coworker ( a high school dropout with dyslexia) read it cover to cover and agrees that it is metaphorical.
For instance, she maintained that Lazarus was not physically dead but SPIRITUALLY dead.
There is no necessity to read the Bible but if it is read as metaphor and symbol it makes sense in ways it does not when read as literal, which reveals it to be primitive, barbaric and petty.
If you read the Bible as metaphor it makes far more sense. Same for all religious writings.
