Agreed. There is absolutely nothing inevitable about progress. Inevitability of progress is actually one of the dangerous myths of Capitalism. We have erected a fragile system dependent on cheap accessible fossil fuels, an nothing is stopping us from disaster once the system stops working. Technological progress or more general human intellectual or spiritual enlightenment is absolutely not guaranteed.
