“War is the health of the State. It automatically sets in motion throughout society these irresistible forces for uniformity, for passionate cooperation with the government in coercing into obedience the minority groups and individuals which lack the larger herd sense.”
I disagree - everyone starts off with the belief in the war aims, but over time, when the blood and guts are flying, the ordinary soldiers see the officers for what they are, just jumped up ordinary people, no better than them. Then after the war comes the reckoning with the stupid leaders who allowed it to happen - hence post WW1 women's emancipation & revolutions, WW2 labour governments, the new deal. Will our post WW3 solutions be any better?
