I agree, Hamas seems to have been surprised at their success so either this shows an Israeli awareness it was coming and complicity or the exact opposite; that Israelis were very unprepared and complacent, which seems the more unlikely.
Isn't it also quite likely that there are CIA or Israeli agents in Hamas itself? The attack and the supposed glee seems to only make sense in this light. Surely Hamas would know what their actions would cause and what was in store for Palestinian civilians.
IRA bombers were indeed reportedly delighted when their operations were a success but they didn't have the certainty that the reprisals against the Irish would be the equivalent of the war on Terror. Imagine if the British, with the full support of the West, had responded to the mainland IRA bombings by barricading the Irish and their children in a small area so they couldn’t leave by land, air or sea, cutting off their water and electricity and bombing 200 civilian targets by night?
There was a very informative interview on Useful Idiots a day or so ago that mentioned, for the first time I can recall, that there are other armed militants in Gaza who are not part of Hamas. If so, one might well wonder what those folks could have been doing when suddenly the doors to the prison were opened.
