I was also raised Catholic. I was told often that Catholics were first in line for heaven and then I went to a huge mass where a priest stood up there preaching in English (no more Latin, sadly) that only Catholics would get to heaven. He listed all the others who would not make it. I had been going to mass every Sunday. I was so disgusted I went and talked to a priest I knew and liked and he agreed with me that was a disgusting sermon. He gave me some books to read about agnosticism and atheism. He gave up the priesthood a few years later. I wanted to get ex-communicated later, but the priest that time (a different one) refused because he said they needed young people who questioned things.
You are lucky. I was told by nuns when I was young that we would burn in hell if we went against the church etc. Turned out that particular place was built on a pile of uranium tailings. Fortunately I only went there for summer school a couple of summers.

Never in my life did I ever hear a priest or nun use such words.
