One of the ancient conditions defining a "just" war - to the extent any war can be just, is the reasonable likelihood of success: where there is no such likelihood, the conflict is simply a slaughter, not a war, no matter how it is termed. Other conditions involve a cost/benefit equation. The slaughter in Ukraine is a prime example, and those who encouraged false perceptions and false hope are responsible. Russia could have totally flattened the country in a week, but that was emphatically never the objective: they wanted to prevent total war and the malign Western stated, and actions-supported objective to split up and destroy Russia. Law, history, morality, and the outcome are all on their side.
