Yes, but today's leaders are not as restrained as yester year's. Also, 80's and Reagan's era was a different time in history (i.e. cold war - bipolar). From the 90s until very recently, we have had a unipolar world with US hegemony. Our current leaders still seem to be operating with the assumption that we are still in that unipolar environment. Their thought processes and information analysis are biased with their pre-existing worldview, which IMHO may be very different from where the world is currently.
Hence, I believe there is a greater risk now than ever before. Of course, whenever I make pessimistic assertions/predictions/thoughts, I always hope that I am wrong - because peace is more important than being right/wrong.
