This is a pointless discussion, really. I think that people in North America are too often doing whatever they do in a robotic fashion and not thinking clearly.
Susan T: I think "russian_bot" is more into trolling, trying to win arguments, and picking on technicalities instead of trying to attain a deeper understanding of issues and exchange of ideas. If you can, I suggest limiting your engagement with him in an effort to not further encourage his trolling behavior. (just my opinion)
I think Russian bot is a little weird sometimes and perhaps a bit argumentative, but I don't see him as a bad person and I think that sometimes his senseless arguments do lead to a better understanding. I don't mind senseless arguing as much as I am offended by name calling and the person who likened the genocide in Palestine to women deciding to have abortions.
You have more tolerance and patience than I have. Those are some skills that I will always need to work on continuously. But I do mind senseless arguments (call it a personal flaw of mine if you will). These "senseless" arguements just waste everybody's time when there is so much more important information and ideas to discuss. IMHO, it's not worth it being bogged down with "senseless arguments" and people that espouse such arguements.
Like you said, I find this "name-calling" to be detrimental and antithetical to developing a better understanding. But, people have egos and individual psychologies, so it's not something that we can control. Hence, we go back to "developing more patience and tolerance" as a way to combat such behavior.
