While forms of tribalism have always existed (as far as I know), nationalism did not really get going in terms of oppression and slaughter until the 19th century, and especially the 20th, when weapons and media were both industrialized and millions upon millions were killed, maimed, terrorized, enslaved, tortured, raped, and whatever else you can think of. The Israelis have some catching up to do if they're ambitious. The US is said to have killed two million civilians in Vietnam, for instance.
