in 1948 israelis knew damn well there would be retaliation for the nakba lest they at least tried to make amends. plenty of opportunities and time to go the other way, instead they chose the path that is also instilled in you by the same nurtured attitudes, imo.
well that would have been a feat under occupation. it's pretty much like reproaching the indigenous colonized tribes or an enslaved population that they don't thrive.
