I believe that back in those days, when both of them were writing, it was conventional to use the term 'man' to mean 'people'. Much like here in Portugal, where I live, if there is a group of 99 women and 1 man, the masculine plural is used. It's just a linguistic convention. Of course you get evil women - the world is full of 'em!
