It's comforting to believe that your government only supports such atrocities because they are manipulated into it, rather than because they have made a cold calculation that supporting Israel is beneficial to their interests, regardless of how much death and suffering results.

(1) The US politicians and power elite encourage (and propagate) the illusion that AIPAC is a major reason for US support for Israel. Instead, it is AIPAC that provides cover and serves as an easy scapegoat for the EVILS of US FOREIGN POLICY. AIPAC (and the other ISRAEL LOBBYs) were created, funded, and thrive "because it serves US politicians" - it gives US politicians a source of money (bribes/corruption), it allows US politicians to do whatever they want and let AIPAC take all the blame (thus getting away scott free), it provides US politicians with "cover" for supporting Israel as "ISRAEL serves the interestes of the US Power Elites (or global capitalists or deep state or oligarchs, etc.)".
