My understanding is that militarisation of police is not a new development in Australia. It's been gradually happening here since 9/11, thanks to the bogus "war on terror".
Here in the US too, Trisha. Here in the US too. President Obama transferred military surplus assets to local police departments, with restrictions that reports indicate were not adhered to, and Trump, in classic republican "law and order" fashion, did away with the restrictions altogether. So the problem, like so many created for us, is bi-partisan and ongoing.
